Erm... reads more clearly but look's a little shaky?! Childlike? (apologies if it's someone's actual writing, mine's 10x worse I swear)

It very well could be, but not mine or anyone I know, so don't worry about insulting anyone :)

Here's another screengrab, this time not the front page, but the main forums page. Instead of just listing the forums, that will just have the "All Threads" content with the forums down the right hand side for easy access.

I like it. Especially the big green button! Easy to find and encourages one to post.

Easy to navigate

Not a fan of the new V4 Travellerspoint font... the background colour is better!

I like it too! I'm with TLWH - the big green button is a great feature and the forum list layout may cut down on the number of new threads being posted in incorrect forums.

I do like the version #4 font almost as much as version #3. It does "correct" the letter problems (s, p, r & o) that TLWH, mojorob and Sander all mentioned. Though Travellerspaint sounds like a fun place too. Version #3 is still the coolest but I guess the issues of not distinguishing some letters had to be addressed.

Yes it does, however not meaning to be "nitpicky" the letter l (lowercase L) is now odd - like an over-sized e.

I'm not sure about the location of the big green button that's been mentioned - above the forum display rather than forum list would be a more natural location for me, and perhaps the button is a little too big in either location. However this button isn't much of an issue for me.

Regarding the "My Subscriptions" on the right-hand side of the forums page, how will this work? As in:

How many will appear? (6 as shown?)

What will the ordering of this be? Possible options are:
- Last threads you posted in, in descending order based on time of your last posts in those threads;
- Last threads you posted in, in descending order based on time of your first posts in those threads;
- Threads you've posted in, in descending order based on most recent posts (by you or anyone else) in those threads.

With the "My Subscriptions" on the right-hand side, is there a need for the link to My Subscriptions being at the top of the forum listing - this could be a part of what's shown on the right-hand side (e.g. underneath the 6 or however many, as a link which says "View All My Subscriptions" or similar.

Thanks Sam I Am. I'd be happy to provide advice when you get to the photo selection feature. Sorry for choosing the wrong forum for this type of feedback! If you create an interaction design thread I'll post more comments there.

Quoting Sam I Am

I'm hesitant to hijack this thread as it's really intended for design related changes, but will quickly answer a few of the things raised. We can split this off into a separate thread if there's more to discuss there.

TLWH was mentioning the photo inserting earlier too. I'll start working on that now that we launched public blog commenting last week and that's off my plate. If you don't mind I might ask the two of you for ideas once I've got something fleshed out?

The linking to a high res option is already available in some form. If you insert thumbnails, a link is created to a pop up that when clicked on also includes the description of the photo from the public gallery. Maybe that should apply to all photos though, not just thumb size (that was done back in the day when the max size of an uploaded photo was much smaller than today).

Have you noticed any consistency in the Save Draft not working? It should always work, but some internet cafes or browsers might have an issue with it.

Ok well I know I'm a little late in joining the band wagon, but as I am waiting for an overnight bus I stumbled across this very interesting forum topic.

First of all I have to congratulate Sam and Peter on the amount of involvement you let us have and actually listening to idea/suggestion and fixes.

Ill try and keep this quick as although I'm a regular user I only use certain parts of the site, mainly blogging and the map features and not so much the other areas.

The growth from V1 to V4 is evidence of the fact that you do value the options of the member and in the current version (V4) has addressed some of the issue I had with versions 1-3.

I do like the new layout and appears to be fresh and in particular the "where are you headed" box with I assume will customize the page and will give new viewers the feeling of wanting to join in.
I particularly like the darker blue band across the top, intentional or not, I think it gives it more definition and stop it from being washed out as in version 1, and also a big fan of the graphic on the right.
It's been mentioned previously and was my initial impression as well when I saw version 3, but I guess it all depends on where you guys are wanting to head with TP. I think blogging is a big part of this website and was the main reason why I joined and not actually having the word "blog" anywhere on the upper front page does not alert the fact to this service. I also quite like the " .... it " Rather than just having "Map" Map? map of what exactly? the world, someone else's travels?

As for the logo well. I think a lot of other people have given suggestions and will just give my opinion on the current V4 logo. I'm not big fan of the original "stick man" figure, but can understand where you are coming from with the size issues, but surely you will have troubles downsizing the V4 logo man? As for the font I do quite like the V3 font, although my first impression was "What does that say?" so perhaps a bit more work on character spacing and so on.

With the "We have XXX members in Melbourne" section, where does this information come from? is it from the users last or current destination in the Travel Map or what they have put on there profile? I have not filled out that section as I am always moving but can see people putting there home location then not actually being there. Not a big thing I know but it is on the front page.

I know it's not re-design related but it was mentioned earlier about the the blogs not saving a draft. This feature is very unreliable and I simply don't rely on it anymore as there have been too many time where the computer I have been on has simply shut down or electricity cut or whatever, only to find that it hasn't even saved on draft of a blog that I had been typing for 40 minutes.

Keep up the good work guys. Is this a whole site re-design with feature such as the mapping and blodding tool or more of a interface / graphic re-design? as I think you travel map (as much as I love it) could do with some tweaks.

Edit: One thing I just remembered, im not sure if I just miss it in the TP newsletter or if it's just simply not there. But the notice of new feature particularly blogging. It's not often I go through my settings and change things but every now and again I do and quite often there is a new feature there or some new service I can link with that I just simply didn't even know about for who know how long. Perhaps a technicaly or features email or to you TP message box just to let you know what is going on and new features that have arrived. Might not be worth while if you don't have many, I have no idea how many changes there are every few months!

Good points. I think that splash content needs some work still, in particular explaining some of the core features. The phrases are a bit ambiguous.

Ok, so we have actually been busy working on this. We have had an illustrator involved in creating new logo text and have reconsidered how to use the backpacker figure. Basically, the plan is to have the logo stand alone as text (handwritten, not a font). The backpacker will move over to the right of the header and will be joined by several other outlined characters. The thought behind that is to be more inclusive in the types of travellers we encourage and also to give a sense of community. The lone figure doesn't do that. I hope to have a complete enough version of that header to show this week. Just in the process of getting the other characters outlined.

With the "We have XXX members in Melbourne" section, where does this information come from? is it from the users last or current destination in the Travel Map or what they have put on there profile?

It could be either. I think using the travel map would make sense, since that is more current and has more information than the profile. The technical side still needs pondering.

I know it's not re-design related but it was mentioned earlier about the the blogs not saving a draft.

Hmm, do you notice the draft failing while you're writing the entry? It should give a "draft couldn't be saved" error (or something like that), when it doesn't work. If you notice that, can you let us know which browser is on that computer? It's most likely a browser related issue.

This particular project is mostly about interface. There will be significant functional changes to the front page to go with it though. And once done it will pave the way for any number of updates, to take advantage of the extra width we have available.

There is some significant work being done on the maps too though, but that is separate and most likely will go live before the redesign does. Or at least into an invite-only beta stage.

We try to keep people up to date with new features via the newsletter, but sometimes we forget to mention them ourselves. One idea floating around is to start mentioning new features in the other emails we send out (ie, blog notifications, forum subscription emails, etc). I think we'd be able to communicate a lot more small things that way, also to people who aren't subscribed to the newsletter.
