If you're changing the logo, you could consider giving the poor guy another leg and some arms? Or even making him a woman?!

;)

Yep, he's got another leg in our current version. No hat, smaller bag and his arms are by his side. It's the same but different. He's still a he. But he's joined by two females - one a little girl and one is a female photographer. And there's two people on bikes.

I know, I'm also very late to this thread too but just came across it this morning. Couple of questions and comments. First off, glad to hear you're finally bringing the logo out of the 70s and into the twenty-first century! I know you came up against a lot of opposition to your stickman, but I felt it was much more functional. I have always felt the logo was very outdated and the dude represented a hiker and not an independent traveller or maybe a hiking Canadian Mounty. But of course, this is all a matter of opinion. The entire concept of tp is very conversational, so I like the idea of a handwritten font, however, I think you have probably already found a more functional one. The most recent one you've posted doesn't really hold much weight, as in font weight. I think you need some thing a little bolder here to anchor your site.

I agree with RedMonkey about the icons being a bit vague and needing a little more description. Perhaps your illustrator could help you with this. I had liked your original version of the "it" after each option. again, I think that fits in with the idea of tp being very approachable. Also, you have designated a great deal of space to this sliver here at the top...does it need this much space? Being a graphic designer myself, I am all for white space, but somehow I feel like we are missing some important content that comes much further down the page. Of course, with a redesign of your icons with perhaps a bit of a description, this space could be much better utilized.

I'm assuming the location on the home page constantly changes. Like maybe 20 different cities that rotate here? Obviously the content itself would be constantly updating. Will things be centered or pushed off to the left side. I view in safari and have a huge space to the right and small space on the left. my eye naturally looks to the center of the screen so this is a bit awkward. Font sizes look good. The "Type a location" font is a bit tiny, but not a big deal. Colors are nice. You could introduce your colors off of the balloon illustration if you want any more punch. There is a nice green and yellow in there. I like the green in the forum page, it works nicely, but I wonder if the location could be better. Or perhaps you could have another "post" link following "show off topic threads" in the header area. i'd almost like to the the large right hand bar green instead of orange too. just a thought.

okay, i'm sure you have too much feedback at this point. think you guys are doing a fantastic job and I know that whatever changed you make, they are usually for a reason and for the best! and for good optimization! good luck! looking forward to the next round!

Oh Peter... There is two people on bikes??? Where have you misplaced your grammar this time?? I'm sending you a The Little, Brown Handbook for Christmas. (Okay, just checked Amazon and it's $53.68 - but there's a $20.99 savings! Guess yous is on your own.)

When do we get to see this rework?

It's the same but different.

Have you been watching Up In Smoke again?

If you read it like this; There's [an image of] two people on bikes.. does that work? Is that a good enough excuse? :)

Soon. This week hopefully.

I don't think I've ever seen Up in Smoke!

Thanks for the thoughtful critique.

The plan is indeed to have locations rotating on the front page by default. Perhaps based on current events at that time. The schedule would be public, so that those interested can help ensure guide articles are spick and span on the day they are shown.

The site will be a fixed block of ~1000px centered in the site. Currently it's about 820px wide at its maximum.

I think the current logo was actually based on an image of a Canadian hiker btw :) Of course, we don't just want to appeal to canadian hikers (not that we have anything against them)

My bad guys!

Ok, slightly late, but here's something to look at.

V5

  • Logo changed (not planning to make any more adjustments to the type, so I hope you like it :))
  • Characters introduced on right hand of header
  • Colour change for top header - flat works better for showing the characters. Illustration will still be changed to match the design better. I don't feel this one is working, although it's better than nothing!
  • Shorter Bar at top, ditched Discuss, etc.. links. Sacrificing that for content higher up the page. Those links are of course handled by navigation anyway really.
  • Small bar introduced right at top. It can contain private links (ie, message center) + login / signup links.

Let me know your thoughts everyone!
