There doesn't yet seem to be a consensus on the "action links". Two who want them back and two who don't (Isadora and myself). Any others feel like weighing in on that? The main problem for me is working out what they should actually say! I'm not really happy with any of our options so far.

Peter, could you clarify what you mean by 'action links' so I can give feedback on them? Sorry if I've missed something somewhere - I had a read through the thread but couldn't work out what you were referring to :)

Oh sorry, by that I meant the Discuss, Map, etc. links + icons that were there in v4 and earlier.

Ah ok. I've just opened both versions and looked at them side by side and I don't think there's any need for the action links, because it's doubling up on what is already on the top tool bar. I think they just create unnecessary clutter and the page looks much neater in V5.

Joining very late, sorry.

From a purely aesthetic point of view the latest version pushes all the right buttons for me. There's always been something niggling me about the design of the existing TP site. It felt completely forum-centric, while many of the other features of the site seemed buried behind if you know what I mean.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the new Travellerspoint logo. I actually think the bolded "Travellers" works against the unbolded "point". It's contrast for the eye. The font is great! As soupatraveler said, it lends itself to the conversational vibe of TP. It's got a very welcoming, relaxed feel to it. I have to say I'll be very sad to see the current backpacker logo disappear. I am really fond of it, but I can see the reasons for losing it. I think the little group of travellers works well because it's suggestive of the communal aspect of TP.

V5, in my opinion, is a really inviting page. It makes you want to linger. If I was a new user viewing it for the first time I see one thing after another that I want to click on and explore further. This page highlights all the sites best features. Everything is accessible from the homepage with one click, which I think is extremely important not just for new users but for all users. If a user has to make several clicks or visit several pages before being able to access a particular feature, there is more likelihood that they won't stay.

The illustration on the top right is great. It gives a nice pop of colour. The colour scheme of the whole page really works. Nothing too garish or too busy. I love the blue/grey of the banner. Very easy on the eye, and still very Travellerspoint.

Take the Tour link very important, as I have found in helping to design portals for my current job. User surveys seem to suggest that if this is missing a potentially interested party might not bother to see what the site is all about. EVeryone is busy busy these days, and if you can cut down the time needed to be invested by someone in learning about your site, they are more likely to join.

You'll never get it right for everyone I guess. Some people will view it from a purely functional perspective, some will view it from a purely aesthetic perspective, but I think you've managed to get the balance just right here. For a homepage I think it's largely about the cosmetic look & feel. You're trying to attract new users to the site so the wrapping needs to be nice :) Once you've got them hooked, then they'll realise how great the content is.

Anyway, maybe I'm just easily pleased or I'm not a good enough critic , but there isn't a single thing about v5 that I don't like. It's a great facelift without straying too far from the "feel" of the original site. If I was visiting for the first time, this is a website I would definitely want to check out!

SOrry, forgot to mention also:

I did not like those action buttons on the top of the v4 page. v5 much better. The page looks more balanced somehow with them gone. Cosmetically, I didnt think they fitted with therest of the page.

Also good move to highlight the join us and log in links in orange.

So how are things going with this now?

Well, quiet though things have been in this thread, we are actually working quite actively on this. Although the front page design is not entirely settled, I've taken the responses to more or less be a consensus on the general framing of the site, so it's being revamped based on that.

There should also be a lot more activity on this in the near future. We're polishing off another large project in our accommodation area and after that, virtually all our resources are dedicated to the redesign and all code changes associated with that. There's going to be a lot of changes though, so the final result will still be a while. I'm hoping we can get a version for people to try out before going live with it. So you will definitely hear more before waking up to a new look TP

Wow, this thread was last active almost exactly a year ago! It's really taken on quite a life of its own this redesign.

Well, good news, we're about to launch this thing finally :) Current plan is to attempt this on Monday, Melbourne time. That will be in the wee hours in Europe and Sunday evening in the US. Need to get a few things sorted prior to this though, but fingers crossed

I think you guys must be working on it as we speak, as TP is extremely slow now. Otherwise, consider this a tip and check the bugs;)
