Hi, I want to travel from Shanghai through the Silk Road and end my trip maybe in Kashgar all through train and bus, as budget is a big deal for me. Any info on the best places to go and the cheapest way to go about it will be really appreciated.
If anyone knows of any blogs or sites with good information on how to do it that would be great as well.

Hi koroviev,

I traveled part of the route recently but the otherway around, so if you check under my profile you will see my blog.

I went through Iran, Pakistan India Tibet China.

Bus and trains are fine, though prices are rising, but i wouldn't do it another way. try themaninseat61 for train info.

If there's anything more you would like to know, let me know or PM me.

Thanks Outcast but the routes you took is really different from what I'm thinking. I want to do Gansu - Xingjian.
Anyone with any info relating to those two provinces, heeeelp!

I went train from Beijing to Urumchi, train and bus to Kashgar, minibus from Kashgar into Pakistan. Hitched on jeeps and walked to Kharimabad and then Gilgit, then bus to Islamabad. Of course, stopped along the way, enjoying the places. I took 3 months with it. Got a lot of recommendations if you're interested.
