Travelling through the Chinese silk road help

Hi, I want to travel from Shanghai through the Silk Road and end my trip maybe in Kashgar all through train and bus, as budget is a big deal for me. Any info on the best places to go and the cheapest way to go about it will be really appreciated.
If anyone knows of any blogs or sites with good information on how to do it that would be great as well.

I went through Iran, Pakistan India Tibet China.

Bus and trains are fine, though prices are rising, but i wouldn't do it another way. try themaninseat61 for train info.

Thanks Outcast but the routes you took is really different from what I'm thinking. I want to do Gansu - Xingjian.

I went train from Beijing to Urumchi, train and bus to Kashgar, minibus from Kashgar into Pakistan. Hitched on jeeps and walked to Kharimabad and then Gilgit, then bus to Islamabad. Of course, stopped along the way, enjoying the places. I took 3 months with it. Got a lot of recommendations if you're interested.

Full day sigh-seeing in Beijing
Visit Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City, and Temple of Heaven.
Day 3
Full day sight-seeing in Beijing
After breakfast visit the Ming Dynasty Tombs and the Great Wall at Badaling.
Day 4
Beijing to Xian
Pay a visit to the Summer Palace, cruise the back streets of Beijing (local Hutongs) and famous Xiushui Street. After an experience in the capital to remember, you’ll catch a flight to Xian.(or “train” sometimes plan ticket is equal to train ticket )
Day 5
Full day sight-seeing in Xian
Today we’ll visit the Terra-cotta Warriors and Horses, the Bell Tower, Wild Goose Pagoda and The Provincial Museum. later enjoy a Tang Dynasty show in the evening.
Day 6
Xian to Lanzhou
Following breakfast, visit to along the Xian City Wall and Grand Mosque. Take to night train to Lanzhou after lunch.
Day 7
Lanzhou to Xiahe
Bus or car journey to Xiahe to visit the Songke Grasslands and Labrang Monastery.
Day 8
Xiahe – Lanzhou – Jiayuguan
Drive to Lanzhou followed by overnight train to Jiayuguan
Day 9
Jiayuguan tour
Arrive in Jiayuguan in the morning and visit the Great Wall Museum, Jiayuguan Pass and the Weijin Tomb.
Day 10
Jiayuguan to Dunhuang
Take morning train to Dunhuang and visit the Yulin Grottoes
Day 11
Dunhuang to Turpan
After breakfast journey to see the world famous World heritage Mogao Grottoes, the echoing-sand dunes of the Ming Shan Mountains, Crescent Lake and Dunhuang Museum.
Day 12
Explore Turpan
Day 13
Turpan to Korla
Day 14
Korla to Kucha
Day 15
Kucha to middle of the Taklimakan desert

Desert to Hotan
