week 14 & 15
well the farm work sucked. actually the work wasn't all that bad. BUt the people, and the location, and the insects...horrible!
I worked for about two weeks before I quit. I lived in a cottage that was a 30 minute drive from the farm. so they would pick me up and force me to work 12-13 hours a day even though I was promised only 8 hours a day. I never got to do laundry because I never got to see the washing machine in the light except for my first tour of the place, plus the washing machine was some ancient machine that required you to do more work then the machine itself. The cottage was rat infested, gecko infested and REDBACK infested! there were at least a dozen redbacks under the cottage...which we had to work under one day. and then there were the flies! HOLY MOTHER OF GOD! Do not go to meandarra!
It was nice actually seeing proper outback...red dirt and all but after two weeks of being yelled at like a kid I finally snapped when the old man called me an idiot. apparently they think filling up some old trailer with gas and pumping it into a tractor is something I should know how to do on my first attempt without any direction at all.
I quit and they decided they weren't going to keep up their end of the deal and give me a 2-3 hour ride back Dalby so that I could catch a bus to Brisbane. So I had to hitch hike from meandarra. but it worked out. I got a ride with a delivery man who was going that way, I just had to ride with him for a while and pick up some packages in some small towns. I should also mention that I only had to make one attempt at hitch-hiking! The very first person helped me!
overall it was terrible but I made a little bit of money and got to see the outback. plus I got a "hitch hiking through the outback" story out of it.
now I'm back in Brisbane trying to lay low and hold onto my money.
I'm done with farm work.
