Is New Zealand as busy as Oz for backpackers and meeting new friends in hostels etc. Any anyone have any idea's where to go and hostel's to stay in etc. Would be great to hear from any of you. I went to NZ on a working holiday 3 years ago and met loads of people. I moved into a shared house with some other backpackers, and was also lucky that I met people through work. I don't think NZ is as busy as Oz for people on working holildays and/or travelling, but there are still plenty of people doing it. Try this site for accommodation, jobs and other backpacker related things: http://www.backpackerboard.co.nz and for jobs Seek is the main website:http://www.seek.co.nz

not sure about hostels - I stayed in the Aloe Tree hostel in parnell when i first arrived, which was small but quiet. ACB seems to be the main one in town, and they seem to organise a lot of social events.

areas that you might want to consider living in which are close to the city with lots going on are Ponsonby, Freeman's bay, Mt Eden, Newmarket and Grey Lynn.

hope this helps, send me a message if you need any more info.

Kiwi's are really friendly so you won't have trouble meeting the locals.
If you want to meet backpackers, that's also not difficult, there are loads of hostels all over new zealand and travellers are more often than not looking to make new friends!
