To stay or not to stay?

Travel Forums Asia To stay or not to stay?

I'm having a dilemma that maybe others have experienced in the past. I quit my job a month ago and have been planning a trip to South East Asia....I planned to go for 6 weeks before starting my next job....I don't know if it's travel jitters or economic worries, but I'm in debate whether to just go for 2 weeks now?

I'm just not sure! I have a feeling when I get there I will want to stay the whole 6 weeks. I don't know whether to stay or just get back to work ASAP...

Has anyone ever been in this position?

Can anyone offer any advice?

Whether there is economic worries or not - it depends on your own personal situation. Can you afford to go for 6 weeks - SE Asia is cheap by western standards therefore your costs will be less than at home - ie a room in VN ensuite can cost anything from $10 +

If l was given 6 weeks off work now before starting a new job - GO FOR IT!! I would love that to have that opportunity and l would have no qualms about going to SE Asia but then again lm bias l love the region!!

Honestly 6 weeks would never be long enough - l spent 3 weeks alone in Vietnam so l think you will find that 6 weeks is not enough to cram in everything you want to see!!

Go for it - enjoy - lm jealous!

I haven't been in that particular situation but I did put off a hospital stay just to go on another trip, figured I might as well travel first and be laid up for a while later! Turned out I could have done both anyway, hospital stay was real brief anyway.

If you haven't been to Southeast Asia before there are some advantages of going now. First, the hotels will have lots of cheap prices because this is "low season!" Low season also means fewer tourists around clogging up the works.

You may get a little extra rain around now but most of the time the rain will stop in an hour or two anyway and the sun will come out again. Up to you. There are plane tickets you can get with an open jaw or open return, usually you pay a little more for them but you can stay the whole 6 weeks or leave sooner.

Personally I would take the trip and figure on 3 weeks at least. Who knows when you will be able to take some time off from your new job. If the oil keeps running up it may cost more to fly 3 or 4 months from now even in October when the prices usually are a little cheaper.

Good luck.

I can't think you're even considering making it shorter, you'll want to stay longer than 6 weeks, and if you're employed, it will be a while until you have that much time to travel.

i think you will regret it if you cut your trip short, as I'm sure once you get out there you will love it. Try not to be nervous, as there are plenty of backpackers around that part of the world and you should be able to hook up with others once you get there if you want to. Moneywise, 6 weeks is not going to be vastly more than 2 weeks, as it's such a cheap part of the world and your flight is one of your biggest outlays. It might be a while before you have the opportunity to travel for this amount of time again, so I would definitely stick to your original plan!
