Hi! The time has come again for me to travel, I did oz on my own 06 for 3 months when I was 20 with Ozexperience and loved it so much I am going to end up working there again 09! The trouble is I want to do the following first and am unsure how to travel round USA ie. by plane, train or bus. Below are the places I want to head for, preferably on a low budget and at end of October, but I am unsure how manageable it is going to be. I am prepared to exclude some of my desinations (but not drastically!):
London - NYC
NYC - (Possibly Niagara Falls if cheap) to Ohio
Ohio - Miami (overland to orlando) - Cuba (if cheapish?! Not essential)
L.A - (overland to San Francisco, down to Mexico but need destination recommended as don't want to travel too far)
Las Vegas - Vancouver (overland to Seattle) also need suggestions of tours/experiences in Canada from Vancouver whilst there
Vancouver - Fiji (Feejee Experience over xmas and new year)
Fiji - Sydney (work for 3 months at least!)
If anyone is doing something similar, as going alone is always daunting, or if you can help me with accommodation/trip recommendations for any of the above places please reply to my thread! There is only so much research you can do at work on a daily basis!!!! Ta and whoop whoop, I am so excited!
Okay, I think I'd rework the itinerary a bit to look something like this (just so you aren't jumping all over the place):
Fly London to NYC
Train/Fly NYC to Ohio (depends on exactly where you are going to in Ohio - train only hits Cleveland, Toledo, and Cincinnatti)
Fly Ohio to Miami (also hit Orlando and maybe Cuba)
Fly Orlando to Vancouver/Seattle
Fly/Train Vancouver/Seattle to San Fran
Bus/Fly San Fran to Las Vegas (depends on money vs. time and comfort)
Bus/Fly Las Vegas to LA (ditto above)
Bus/Fly LA to Mexico
and on to Fiji and Sydney
Niagara Falls is on the opposite side of the state from NYC, so it's a bit out of your way. If you do go it would probably be best to head straight to Ohio from there.
To travel to Cuba you must transit a destination outside the USA (Mexico, Canada or the Caribbean).
The best way to fly one-way in the USA is Southwest Airlines or jetBlue. Bus travel in the USA is not good at all, and the train is super slow and only good in specific regions like the Northeast, Northwest corridors, E. Coast/Midwest-Florida or transcon via Chicago (Amtrak).
You can fly Vancouver-Fiji with one stop in Honolulu on Air Pacific. Air Pacific also goes on to Sydney - this is the Fijian national carrier (associated with Qantas).
The better Mexican destinations are quite distant from the US border, but you could get a taste of Mexican culture in Tijuana (adjacent to San Diego) - simply take the TJ Trolley from downtown San Diego.
