Hey all,

I am in the process of trying to sort out an itinerary for my RTW trip which i'm looking to commence some time in 2009. I am interested in travelling through Asia as part of my trip and penciled in a flight to Bangkok and the travel by land to Singapore.

I would be interested to know if anyone has done this trip and if anyone could give me any useful hints or tips about how to travel, where to stop and how easy or difficult it all is???

I have researched into the option of taking a train for the approx 1,200 mile journey and possibly stopping off at a few destinations on the way down such as Kuala Lumpur and Penang ut would like to hear abot any other interestin destinations if anyone has any. I would be looking to spend about 3/4 in Asia on my trip.

Thanks
Aled:)

In Malaysia, you can try to check Putrajaya, the envisioned political capital of Malaysia... it is near KL and is a beautiful place... Penang is also a good place... check out the beaches and the night market in Batu Ferringhi...

after Singapore, I hope you can try to fly to the Philippines...there's a lot of good places to see here also.. ;)

Hi
We've just done the trip in the opposite dir4ection. Singapore to KL by overnight train, KL to Butterworth over night train, ferry to Penang for a few days then flew Penang to Bangkok for really cheap with Air Asia.

Was great and the trains are clean and easy to use, i'd suggest taking a 2nd class sleeper.

Feel free to ask questions!

Ta and have a great trip.

I'm thinking about going to Phuket and off to the nearest Malaysian paradise. Id like to compare Phuket and Langkawi. I assume this is possible by train. I'll find out soon.

Take train or bus down south to Suratthani and spend sometime in Koh Samui and Phangan. Then head down to Phi Phi. Stop at Hatyai to do some shopping and enjoy the nightlife there. Then go to Satun. Take ferry over to Koh Tarutao. Take ferry back to Satun and change to another ferry from Satun to Langkawi. From Langkawi, take ferry to Penang. Then take bus or train to Kuala Lumpur. Here, you can visit Batu Caves, Chinatown, Central Market, Twin Towers, KL Tower, Masjid India etc. You can catch the overnight train or bus to Cameron Highlands and Taman Negara as well. On the way down to Singapore, stop by at Malacca. ;)

Enjoy your trip!

Sorry to jump on your thread but myself and a friend are going to be doing the Bangkok to Singapore route in a couple of months so I am also looking for advice on where is best to stop off. We are landing in Bangkok on 1st Oct and flying out of Singapore on 25th Oct so I am hoping that the 25 days will be enough to make this journey, can anyone tell me if this is crazy or roughly how long it would take to travel this far using the trains and buses?

I know that its going to be tough to fit everything in but so far this is a rough itinerary (not in any order really)

Bangkok
Phetchaburi
Surat Thani
Ko Samui
Koh Phi Phi
Koh Phangan
Penang
KL
Singapore

If anyone has any other ideas or could put these places into the best order to maximise our traveling then thank you.

We are first time (very excited) travelers so all the help we can get is greatly appreciated. :)

I am doing now. But I might skip Singapore (been there). I am just trying to go to Indonesia.

The trains, I economy class from Penang to KL but they were sold out. I think its best to book them in advance. The locals said you can buy the tickets in advance.

Penang to KL, I bought VIP tickets from the bus station. But I ended up using a very old and dirty bus.

Penang, George Town is a UNESCO world heritage site.
The ferry to Penang is very very very cheap. 1.20 ringgit (two way)
You can take a train to Butterworth from the Border of Malaysia.
