I'm currently in Oz working "hard" to save some $$$ for the next leg of my trip......

I've decided to fly Sydney > Phuket & I then have 6 weeks before I fly Bangkok > New Zealand

So I was just wondering what people would reccommend as 'must see's' in SEA, I've had friends travel Thailand,Vietnam,Cambodia,Laos and they all sound pretty amazing places, would 6 weeks be a sufficient time to devote to all these places?

first of all, when you gonna b there?

I'm killing about 8 weeks there myself starting late Oct-Dec18.

Here's some jumping points,

After u have your fill of thailands beaches, head to the North to Chiang Mai. 1-2 weeks could be spent in this area...doing the packpackers loop in Mai Hon Song, visiting Tham Lud cave, or going far north to Chaing Rai. (Imagine taking 3 day river boat trip from Fang to Chiang Rai?)

Then get yo butt to Laos! Vang Vang seems like the quintessential backpacker experience. Though i'm sure it will be full of Backpackers, Friends Bars, and the kinda dudes from back home you were looking to hopefully not see on your travels. But thats besides the point WHICH IS that the river tubing, trapeze, cheap Lao beer, and really nice scenery will be worth it. I'm killing about 7 days in Laos, myself, hitting it up S-N Vietienne, Vang Vieng, Luang Pabrang.

Then I got 4 weeks in Vietnam. If you wanted to see it, you could do a few days or week in N. Vietnam, (Sapa maybe?), and then take a train and do the south. Or take a week to see the Central Highlands on the back of a motorbike. (See Easy Riders)

I didn't mention Cambodia, but I bet that would be a cool stop! Ankor Wat's pretty special, i hear!

If you want more info on anything I've already mentioned, gimme a hollar.

The Reverend Croftee-POO!

wow 6 weeks is a very short time with too much to see in South East Asia... in Vietnam try checking out Ha Long Bay, I loved that place with its tranquility...

and... if you may opt.. you can try to squeeze a few days to fly to the Philippines to see the pristine beaches of Palawan or Boracay.. :D

Thanks for the tips I'm there from Mid November to late December.........& yeah I know 6 weeks is a shockingly low amount of time, especially as I'll have spent a whole year in Australia, dedicating 6 weeks is a poor show to an area I've had so many people recommend & give good stories about

But I guess it's better than not visiting at all,

i did the typical route of south east asia, but i did it in 6 months not six weeks....
if i was you id just stick to one or 2 of the countrys metioned, id recomend thailand and laos.
vietnam takes a long time if you do it propally, save it for another trip maybe.
ive been in oz for 5 months now, im in sydney at the moment and it has nothing on SE asia.
currently saving up to go back!!!!

LadyCroft seems to be doing something very similar to myself. I fly out in October to do SE Asia for 9 weeks, and am going up to Loas, through Vietnam and am considering Cambodia.

I Thought 8 weeks would be enough to see and experience these place but now think Vietnam require at least 4 weeks of my time and would much rather stay in Cambodia for a week or two instead of just passing through.

I got to australia and NZ for over a month after in January and instead of doing the round the world route I am going back to Asia.

I have been told the boat ride from thailand to Laos is a must! Cambodia has ANgkor Wat (one of the wonders of the world) and am sure you have found loads of info on thailand! I have never been but just gong though the Asia forum you will find loads of helpful tips and places to see! Hope you have a great trip!
