Does anyone know of a nice smallish town near Munich for a visit. Something with a medieval town center. not far maybe within 2 hours from Munich by train? Decent nightlife too?

Augsburg is nearby has a medieval town centre, but from what I remember is pretty boring besides that.
I like Ulm (right on the border to Bavaria), it's a university town with a decent nightlife and the tower of the Münster (church) is the highest in the world. You can even climb up there if you're game ;).

Not sure about nightlife but Meersburg is a beautiful town just next to the Bodensee. It is my friend's hometown and i think it is a lovely place. Could be interesting maybe... just an option

I would highly recommend Bamberg although it is about 3 hours away on the train. It is probably most of the most picturesque cities in Germany and is also well-known for being its beer capital with 9 breweries. The town is surrounded by seven hills like Rome and you can visit the cathedral that overlooks the city with its rose garden. Having lived there I can also say the nightlife is respectable for the size of the town. I would also recommend visiting the Schenkla beer kellar which has been brewing there for centuries.
