My girlfriend and I are travelling to Cozumel for 1 week and would like to take a day trip to Chechen Itza. Does anyone know if this is possible? Can one take a ferry ride to the mainland, then some other form of transportation to the site? Are there other interesting day trips to explore on the mainland as well? Thanks in advance for any responses.
Most of the Chichen Itza tours/buses leave from Cancun, and I think you have to go to either the airport at Cancun or into the hotel section of Cancun to rent a car. So, as long as you can get from Playa del Carmen up to the airport--or can take a bus up that way, then you can get to Chichen Itza. I'd check with some Playa del Carmen hotels and see if they offer tours directly from their hotels.
P.S. I suggest you rent a car and take the toll road out to Chichen Itza (that's what my wife and I did). It costs a bit more that way, but it allows you to get there (and back) much quicker and to take a much smoother and straighter road. Also, this way you can stop at a cenote (small indoor pool in a cave) at Chichen Itza if the weather is hot--and maybe go on to Merida (colonial capital city) for a day if you want--and visit other Mayan cities in the area (there are over 15 of them in the Yucatan). But it's your call--and things might simply if you just take the bus tours and leave the rest to them.

we stayed on the Riviera Maya and took a tour. We were picked up and taken to a cenote, lunch, Chitchen Itza, small town and then back to the hotel. I say if you find a tourist counter then there would definitley be a tour to pick you up from the mainland.
We decided on a tour because we could both sleep on the way back. It was night so we couldn't see anything out the windows otherwise we'd be too worried about missing the scenery!
You can get a tour directly from Playa del Carmen. I know you can book out of Porto grand real resort and it is just a couple of blocks away from where the Cozumel ferry lands. Chichen Itza is great, have a good time.
