Hey, I just realised it's the 4th of July. So Happy 4th of July to all the Americans on TP. Have a great day! "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness."

So, how will you celebrate the day? Picnics in the country, a barbie with friends? Fireworks, lots of parties and grog? Marches, parades, music?

We'll be spending our July 4th with a friend who's decided to visit the Middle-Of-Nowhere. We'll be BBQing and drinking lots of mojitos. If the weather is good, we should be able to see 3-4 different fireworks displays from our own back yard. We also have some leftover mini-fireworks from last year. They may work - they may not. We can always do the "hold-up-your-lighter-at-a-concert thing if they don't.

Thanks Y'all are ahead of us, so we're not quite there yet, but it should be a great long weekend! As for me, I no longer play with Barbies, but I'm sure my friend's daughter would let me join her if that's a prerequisite We have a great Jazz Fest here in town, which should be a blast and the weather is looking nice, so it will be lots of fun to sit chill outside and take in the tunes. Otherwise, I'm assuming lots of food - that's pretty typical for my family (we are Italian-Americans) and my dad's talked about going fishing. Hope things are good on the other side of the world!

In Australia a "barbie" is a BBQ you know a barbecue what you cook meat and chicken on. It's Aussie lingo - slang, or the Australian vernacular. We call sausages "snags" and if we said, "Throw another snag on the barbie", that means "Put another sausage on the BBQ." As in. "Throw a coupla snags on the barbie" = "Put a couple of sausages on the BBQ."

Beer is often called, the "amber fluid", or "a stubby", wine is "plonk" and alcohol is "grog". And a "six-pack" is 6 stubbies, and a "slab" is 24 cans (of beer.)

Didn't think to translate, sorry about that. Um if you're interested, "chuck a wobbly" means to go off crook - get cross, lose your temper. The US equivalent would probably be "a hissy fit."

And we abbreviate a lot of our words. Like, ambo, servo, decko, garbo, arvo, rellies, bickies, aggro, blowie, bizzo, and heaps of others.

thanks! you're so kind to wish us well! i'll spend the morning in the garden and then head over to a friend's house on the other side of the neighborhood where we'll drink lots of mojitos, grill up loads of meat and eat lots of good food and just relax. i don't think we'll head into the city for the fireworks as its usually a madhouse, but who knows...the mood might take us. Just looking forward to taking it easy and enjoying the time with friends!

Lol - I did know barbie, I was just being a pain in the butt However, the other Aussie slang I don't think I've heard except for grog - very interesting It's like the first time I heard discussion of "meeting" someone in Ireland. Or even. Also had a Palestinian friend in Ireland who said that a certain very sad cowboy-esque hat is what Texans wore. My response of "A Texan wouldn't be caught dead in that," took a bit of explanation
