I went to Cairns a couple of years ago and I personally really liked Kuranda. It is a small town up in the hinterland of Cairns which you can drive to but when we were there we took a train trip up through the rainforest past waterfalls, and then after spending the day looking around the town we came back down in a cable car where you get brilliant views over Cairns and surrounds, the rainforest and beach .etc.

You could also do a day trip out to the Great Barrier Reef from either Cairns or Port Douglas - there are heaps of tour operators that do day trips and usually involve lunch, and time for snorkelling on the reef plus extras such as underwate observatories for viewing fish/coral and diving .etc. depending on which tour you choose.

Hope this helps!

Hi, what time of year will you be visiting Cairns/Port Douglas and for how long? There are lots of things to do up there, if you have a car for 4 days then you could take the chance to go east of Cairns into the Atherton tablelands and do the waterfall loop. You can also head north and visit Mossman Gorge and Cape Tribulation which are quite beautiful. You don't need the car to go diving and snorkelling, there are tours out of Cairns and Port Douglas for these activities. You can check out my trip pictures, I think there's some of the area. Have fun!

Hi Melatrip, I too ask what time of year you will be visiting? FNQ is tropical which two seasons, the wet and the dry. Wet season is from November/December to May. It is also Stinger Season - box jellyfish- very dangerous. visitor information. As others have said a trip to Kuranda by train and skyrail is very popular, and a day trip to the Atherton Tablelands where you can see the Millaa Millaa Falls, Lake Barine, the Strangler Fig Tree, plus Paronella Park.. Here is a map of the area.

You can do a cruise to the Great Barrier Reef from either Cairns or Port Douglas. Personally I'd recommend Port Douglas, it's better to choose a tour company that goes to the outer reef because the coral is better and has more colour. If you click on "Reef Tours" in the top left hand corner it will take you to a list of operators.

Port Douglas - Sunday markets run from around 8.30 to 12 noon. The Rainforest Habitat Wildlife Park , the Low Isles. A number of cruises available Shaolin a Chinese junk and Sailaway are just two of the tours going there.

Apart from the GBR, the Daintree Rainforest is the one place you must see. Mossman Gorge, Daintree River cruises, The Kuku Yalanji Dreamtime is an Aboriginal company and offer very good tours, guided walks and they share knowledge of bush tucker, dreamtime legends, and they give a Didgeridoo performance. I'd highly recommend it.

I wouldn't worry about stopping between Cairns and Port Douglas. Have a great time.
