Sadly the Northern Territory in Australia now has speed limits, but something i'd really like to do is some highway driving where the speed is limited only by the capacity of the car. Germany's autobahn's are one option; are there any others?

Maybe I should be thinking somewhere where speed limits exist, but are rarely enforced. Thailand comes to mind ...

You should consider going out on a racetrack. They have them all over the place. Many have race-driving schools that teach you how to drive like the pros. The Circuit Mont-Tremblant north of Montreal has the Jim Russell Driving School--very popular and you get all the open road and speed you'd like in a race car, to boot. And it's safe, too!

If you're looking for highway driving, I'd really suggest sticking to places where there's no posted speed limit. That means locals are used to driving at excessive speeds and know how to react and have been trained to drive without speed limits (ask a German how much they pay for driving courses!). Plus you'll probably enjoy driving more around like-minded people.

On highways where speed limits are enforced, drivers are easily scared or distracted by speeders--and their reactions can cause massive accidents. Even if you're in complete control of your vehicle, one nick from a driver who doesn't know how to react and that may well be that.

You have a good point about scared drivers I think - I'll definitely stay away from places with enforced speed limits! Plus with racetracks, I wouldn't have to travel o/s for the experience.

To me, though, a racetrack just doesn't have the same appeal as the open road for this type of experience.
