can 'country' be made a mandatory profile field?

Travel Forums System Talk can 'country' be made a mandatory profile field?

I would like to propose that 'country' be made a mandatory field. Many question posters ask have different answers depending on where they are from. If everyone were forced to give their country information, it would save time checking out profiles before being able to answer questions.

Do you mean citizenship country or residence country?

Once upon a time, citizenship was mandatory. We ditched it in order to make signup as fast as possible. This is particularly important in the context of members signing up through Facebook to create a map. Adding their citizenship in there just seems like too much..

Or so I think :)

Forgot they were separate fields... I was referring to whichever is taken as the source for the poster's information in the forums. Also, this is obviously more complicated than I thought. Let's forget I mentioned it.

-Mentioned what?

Exactly.

It might be good if a note could be added on the "post new thread" page for the very first post a new member makes if the "citizenship" field for that member is empty, saying something like: "The answers to many questions (particularly about visas) can vary a lot depending on where you are from. It would be helpful if you mention this in your post, or _update your profile_ with this information."

You also need to remember that whilst a person will have one resident country, they may have multiple citizenship countries. The citizenship option in the profile may need to be expanded to allow for this?

I second that. The amount of times replies to a long visa question had to be "what's your citizenship?" are just too many.
