My Wife and I are going on a cruise next April. Yep, in 2009. The departure of the ship will be from New York City.

After checking the airlines and the costs of the tickets, well, I fainted. Highway robbery.

Talking about highway, we have decided to go GREYHOUND! From Toronto to Newark, New Jersey and stay a few days there and commute to New York to see the sights.

After all that my question.....Has anyone taken the bus from Toronto, or for that matter, Buffalo to New York? Would appreciate any input as to what the ride is like. We don't wanna meet someone like Charles Manson or Lizzy Borden....

Thanks for any information.....

What about Amtrak? It's bound to be more expensive that Greyhound, but might be worth it. I don't mind Greyhound for shorter trips, but feel like it's a big pain for longer ones. That's just my opinion though. I don't think you have to worry about safety any more than general public transport. I could be wrong, but I think it's probably a little far out for booking those kinds of travel. You might also want to monitor and see if any of the airlines have sales in between now and then. Best of luck

I think both Amtrak and Greyhound on that route would be a pretty similar type of customer. If you have a few days (which apparently you seem to do as you were talking about staying in Newark for a few days - NEWARK?!?), you could head up to Montreal via train or bus, and then down to NY from there. It's not a bad way to break up the journey.

If you do stay in Newark, make sure you stay by the PATH station. 24 hour trains into NYC. Even better, try and get a place in Jersey City, which is closer to Manhattan, still on the 24 hour PATH system and a lot nicer than downtown Newark.

Thanks. Already checked out Via Rail and Amtrak which is a better way to go but the train doesn't get into New York until 9:30 PM and we are planning on staying in a hotel in Newark, a Best Western.

The bus goes directly to Penn Station in Newark, about 5 minutes from the hotel and gets in at around 6AM....Really early but better than late at night.

Also, the trip into New York on the Path train is about 40 minutes so we can go there to check out New York.

Just wondering about the trip by bus. Never tried it before, usually flying but, hey, why not give it a shot. I mean, what could happen.....:)

There's no problem taking buses around the New York City area or taking a bus there from Montreal--but I think the only thing we are questioning is the decision to stay in Newark. Newark is probably the most dangerous city in the New York City area. Like Greg W said, either stay close to the bus station, or consider going over to Jersey City. This would also make your daily commute into New York City much shorter.

Have a great trip.

I've travelled a fair bit on the Greyhound in USA, the longest trip I took being from Flagstaff to NYC (3 days) and I have never had any problems with Greyhound. I would advise to wear something warm as the buses can be quite chilly!
