Hi, i'm planning my first ever trip to China. I will be in Shanghai from 29th July till 6th August. I'm been searching for the best located budget hotel in Shanghai. Would appreciate if anyone can recommend a budget hotel located near the Bund and Nanjing Lu. My budget is less than USD40 per night. Thanks!

I stayed here Shanghai City Central International Hostel in Shanghai, China, No.300 Wuning Road, Putuo District.

Singles were around 30USD and dorms 8 USD. Clean with restaurant friendly staff. Metro just outside and across the road links to city center and the Bund easily. They offer a railway pickup for free. Or at least did in March 08

Its the OLYMPICS plague... Hostels rates will soar to the heavens, if they are available. I thought they don't give out VISAS without hotel reservations??? Well base on experience in GUANGZHOU, hostels go for a 50% increase for dorm rooms in times of massive foreign arrivals.

well, I have been to several cities in China. I ussually stay at YHA hostels... you could buy a YHA card from a YHA member hostel. The prices are ussually 50 rmb/chinese yuan and below. For Shanghai its 50 to 65 RMB, these are pre OLYMPICS rates.

check out YHA or Hostelling international, they have websites.

Well, i'm basically looking for a budget hotel within walking distance to the Bund and Nanjing Lu. A budget hotel sort of like Green Tree or Motel168. But not sure which branch of theirs is the nearest to the those 2 places. Should have listened to my grandma when she told me to learn Mandarin! sigh!

I have booked into this budget hotel: Jin Jiang East Asia Hotel, and it's on East Nanjing Road which apparently is very central. i booked on but you can go direct through the hotel's website too I think.

Here I find 4 hotels that come up under $40 a day. I don't know anything about them. I have just started researching Shanghai for my trip in 3 weeks.

I just checked my itinerary and I paid NZ$46 per night there, so that's about US$30. It's an excellent location and pretty good for the money.
