I am about to book 5 nights at the 709 on George Hostel in Sydney!
From 29th Dec 08 to 2nd Jan 09.
It is 20 quid a night.
Has anyone stayed there, it looks okay...
Is this about right for that time of year and is 5 nights a long enough booking considering the time of year or will we be able to book easily after that!
Would appreciate any advice!
Thaaaaaaaaaaaaaaanks! : )
Don't know about the hostel you're planning on staying at but you need to book your nights VERY SOON as that's pretty much the most popular time of year to be in Sydney.
Hi Danuta123, not sure what "20 quid" is in Australian dollars. Hostels range from around AUD$20 - $35, depending on location, facilities etc. Here is a good place for checking out hostel. And yes, you really will need to book asap. NYE in Sydney is very popular and many hostel are bookd out months before.
Good luck with it and have a great time.

Hi, i stayed in this hostel a week ago for a week and it was really good! The staff are really really friendly and helpful, whether its first thing in the morning or midnight, they're smiling! the beds are comfy, the whole place is spotless - it's still pretty shiny and new right now, but i expect they'll still have the same high standards when you get there. I paid 24 AUD a night to stay in a 6 bed girls dorm, and i know their double rooms are 78 AUD but i didnt stay in one. you can get cheaper double rooms in Sydney, with more facilities (tv, sink etc) but at this place you're paying for great location, cleanliness and air con/heating. I hope you enjoy your stay, I'd definately recommend 790 on George!
I stayed there last New Years Eve and it was alright. The one down side was that it is right on the corner of two major roads in Sydney which have 24/7 traffic. This means that if you are a couple of levels up the traffic noise is very loud so you need some ear plugs to get some sleep. It was not much quieter than sitting near a jet engine when it is ready to start going to the runway. After one night I got ear plugs and even those allowed me hardly any sleep. If you request to be in one of the higher up levels then the noise supposedly isn't as much of an issue. It didn't help though that they had screwed the window open wide so it could not be closed at night!
Unfortunately 5 nights is not a long enough booking for that hostel for that time of year. On the hostels own website when you get to the conditions of the booking it states:
"Important: Cancellations of bookings within 48 hours of arrival will incur 1 night's accommodation charge (except between 20 December - 4 January) Reservations between 20 December - 4 January, minimum stay 7 nights and require 3 weeks notice of cancellation (cancellations within this period incur a 100% charge). Passport must be produced at check-in."
You may get a different answer if you call them direct rather than booking on the hostels own website.
That time of year is just crazy in Sydney. I booked in about June last year for last NYE and that was the only place left in Sydney with availability for NYE except the Blue Parrot hostel which was asking $99AUD a night for a dorm room and also a minimum 14 night stay! You need to book ASAP or miss out as all the hostels I passed and all the hotels as well had no avaibility signs on the doors last NYE.

Wow thanks for all your replies!
I will look into how long we can book for etc and get booked up asap!
I am not too fussed about noise etc as long as I have somewhere safe to stay!
Thanks a lot x
