Hey!

I'm looking to hike tp North Dome in early august, but would prefer to backpack it and camp in the backcountry, opposed to the way crowded car-campsites and the day hike.

Any suggestions? I know you can hike from as far back as Yosemite Falls trail, but I couldnt' gather where the backcountry campsites are, or whether you can just camp anywhere off trail...

thanks!
jessica

Places to pitch all over the place and camp; you should be able to do day hikes to the top of El Capitan, Eagle Peak, North Dome, and Indian Rock.

I had a blast back country camping in the Tuolumne Meadows... even had a bear encounter (actually a mom and three cubs). Lots of water... river & lakes. Beautiful!

To get to North Dome, there are two trails--the longer Tamarack Flats trail (which seems to be the one you want--17 miles or 27.3 kilometers one-way to North Dome), or the shorter Porcupine Creek trail (5.2 miles or 8.3 kilometers one-way to North Dome).

Here's some details on the trails in Yosemite:
