I bought a trip to Budapest to surprise my boyfriend from 20th till the 24th of October. And since we are going to Budapest I started to find information about the place and found out that the 23rd of October is a big holiday for the Hungarians. I was wondering if shops, flea markets, restaurants, theaters and so on are closed for that day? Does anyone know?
And I would also like to know what sights and things you who have already been to Budapest recommend?
Hei fra Budapest
23rd October is indeed a national holiday (commemorating the 1956 revolution and war of independene against the soviets and also the proclamation of the Republic in 1989). On that day shops and offices are closed, and it is also going to be a so-called "long-weekend" as the day falls on Thursday, meaning that Friday will act as a Saturday (limited opening times).
Things not be missed while beeing here: a boat trip on the Danube (possibly after dusk), a thermal bath, the castle quarter and much more.
Unfortunately recently national holidays has tend to had riots as a "supplementary programme". This is nothing to be fear of, only a couple of people making noises in the evening, however it is good to aware of and check the news beforehand. You might also consider to schedule a daytrip to that day (e.g. the Danube bend, or the Castle in Gödöllő are all worth a half-day, full-day trip).
In case You need more info, or want to meet up to be showed around, just let me know
