Travel Forums Asia LAOS, do cheap accomodations exist???

I just checked out hostelworld.com for the nth time and only two hotels appeat from my search.

the lowest is more than 1,000 baht and the other one was more than 2,000 baht.

I only spend 100-200 in Thailand. I find these guest houses or hostels or hotel by luck. But I don't want to bank on luck all the time, especially if I going to LAOS.

places I am interested:
1. THE CAPITAL, LUANG PHRABANG, AND VANG VIENNE

Yes, there are cheap places to stay in Laos...don't bother trying to book (or look!) ahead just wander around when you get there and try to bargain the guesthouse down if you don't like the price.

We were there in March last year and paid US$10 (about 300 baht) in Luang Prabang, US$4 (about 130 baht) in Vang Vieng and US$12 (about 400 baht) in Vientiane. These prices were for private double rooms. In LP and Vang Vieng it was a fan room but in Vientiane we had a huge room with air con, cable tv and a fridge. There were also cheaper places than what we paid but we preferred to pay a little extra to have a slightly nicer room.

Thanks, so I'll go wonder around and look then. I do that most of the time. But I hope it will be a work in the park, literally.

Yep, sounds pretty accurate. We had a little trouble finding cheap(ish) accomodation in Vientiane, ended up paying US$15 for a pretty spiffy room before moving to an $8 Hostel. About $9 in Luang Prabang and less than $5 in Vang Vieng. You'll be sweet, have fun.

Totally agree with the above. I never paid more than $10 per night anywhere in Laos.

In Luang Prabang, walk a bit beyond the obvious riverfront guesthouses as they tend to try and overcharge. I ended up paying $4 for a great double room, easily the best accomodation I had in Laos.

I found van viang's accomodation a little slummier, but paid around $3 here as well.

And yes, vientiane is the hardest to find accomodation, but if you are willing to pay closer to $10 it shouldnt be a problem. Its a little harder to find rooms with private bathrooms at the lower price range.
