Personally, I like to get the info on how to get there (cause you never know if there how many options you have on getting to a particular place, and how close it is to major cities, etc), climate (cause god knows, we ALL need info on Canadian climate due to its erratic nature - this coming from a Canadian), and the last has to be a tie between accomodations and info on festivals and events (cause it's good to know where to stay, what to see and do and when to do them). Maps are convenient, but there are so many websites with that info on hand that it's not absolutely necessary.

If you want this sort of info check out The Lonely Planet series. I bought the one for Canada and it has all the info you ask for here exepct the proper maps. But it says where to buy or get them. Very usefull books. There's also one for the Rocky Mountains, but I'm not sure if that one is only for the USA rockies. Also there is one for British Columbia. In The Netherlands you can get them for Euro 30,-. Very usefull books
