Xiamen is not an island. But Gulangyu is an island off the coast of Xiamen.

Oh Xiamen is an island.... I've checked in Xiamen maps and it is an island..

Well, you are right, in a way. The map shows only the Xiamen Island, which is a small part of the bigger Xiamen city. I think many maps show only the island because it's a central business district.

I myself has relatives in Xiamen but they are from my grandfathers' family... both of my grandfather came from Xiamen before they settled in Manila.. unfortunately I don't speak any Chinese even Hokkien and I don't know any of them there anymore as they very distant relatives already...

Wow... looking at your name, I wouldn't have guessed. Is it common in the Philippines for ethnic Chinese to drop the surnames, or is it due to regulations like the Indonesia once did, or something else?

Oh, if i'm not mistaken, there was a period here in the country that many Chinese families, mostly from Amoy, had to change their surnames to a Filipino surname for them to get citizenship.. but today many Chinese families use their Chinese surnames like Tan, So, Go, Ching, and many more..

My mom's surname is So, while my father should have the surname of Yu but they've registered their name under a Filipino surname...
