I'm planning a trip to the east coast of Australia starting in October '08. My initial plan was to fly into Sydney and casually make my way up to Cairns. I plan to arrive in Cairns in late October and look for employment and housing. After reading several similar threads I am questioning whether or not I should alter my timeline due to weather/ seasons.
Would it be better to stay south until April/ May '09 and then trek up to Cairns for their "winter season"? If so, can anyone suggest any southern towns that are FUN yet affordable? If you think that the initial plan will be fine please let me know that too!
By the way, I'm supposed to be traveling w/ a friend from college. However, I will have to roll solo if he bails out on me. I'd love to meet fellow travelers along the way if anyone else is planning a similar trip!
G'Day justin9, definitely alter your timeline. Cairns being tropical, wet season runs from November to May - very hot, very humid and wet. Not too busy chances of getting work will be far better during the "season". Peak season being June- August.
Stay south, the GC is good for fun. (GC = Gold Coast) Surfers is great, a tad over-commercialised but I loved it. Byron Bay in northern NSW is another great place, lots of surfing, plenty of backpackers laid-back plenty of whatever you fancy. Byron is the place where you:-
HAVE to get dreadlocks,
You HAVE to get beads in them
HAVE to go to a surf school
HAVE to get p*ssed
You HAVE to do this at Cheeky Monkey's
HAVE to party all night
You HAVE to take a day trip to Nimbin
Need I say more? It really is a fantastic place and you HAVE to take lots of photos.

Whistler 2 is right, stay South & head to the far Northern parts in April / May. Byron Bay area is good for the things quoted! Not quite what I would seek out BUT you are young and would probably enjoy the party scene..
Coffs Harbour nearby, is also a nice town. Any further North and you need to prepare for wet conditions that get wetter & humider the further you go.
As a bit of fun and a rough guide to the weather in Oz, imagine the USA superimposed upside down over Australia and, having the opposite seasons (USA winter = Oz summer). Would you venture into southern Florida during your summer?
Northern Australia (Cairns) is closer to the Equator so more humid and tropical storms we call Cyclones (Huricanes to you) between December & April.
If possible, don't limit yourself to one place, travel the south coast of NSW and even venture into Victoria but FNQ (Far North Queensland) is majic . In any event, it will be an adventure so make the most of your time in Oz.
Thanks Guys! I really appreciate the insight. Byron Bay sounds pretty cool. How's the cost of living there?
