Travel Forums Australia / New Zealand & The Pacific In OZ for a week! Help?!

Hey All,

I am stopping over in Australia for a week in between my travels. I know a week sounds crazy short, but my budget doesn't allow me to stay there too long!

I am flying into sydney and flying out of melbourne. Time is obviously against me and wondered if any one could offer advice on essential stuff to see while I am in each city for about 3 days or so.

Finally what would be the best way for me to get from Sydney to Melbourne? Does anyone know how long the train takes and cost? Would flying be a better idea seeing as I have such little time? Cheers guys

Will vary a bit depending on what month you are going, but if you book in advanced with virgin or jetstar you could get there for about 35 pounds at cheapest, or they do happy hour deals, 12pm-1pm East Australian time, you might pick up an ever cheaper flight.

What time of year are you going? Basically if it's in Summer you'll want to include more of the beach.

I'd suggest 4 days in Sydney and 3 in Melbourne.

For Melbourne you should check out:
- Have a walk around Federation Square/Flinders St Station/South Bank/Crown Casino
- Botanical gardens (if you're into that thing)
- Night life: Fitzroy St in St Kilda and/or Brunswick St in Fitzroy (or Crown Casino)
- You could catch an AFL game if you're there on Fri/Sat/Sun from March-September, or at least watch it in a pub.
- Check out St Kilda beach if you're there in summer
- Then theres the typical zoo/aquarium/theme park (Luna park) etc. if you're into that

Lots of day trips but I'm not sure if our transport system will make this easy with the limited time you have, unless you have access to a car. Look into Great Ocean Road. Also consider Phillip Island or Sorrento/Portsea (if summer)

As for Sydney: Opera house, Harbour bridge, Bondi beach - and I'll leave it for someone more knowledgeable to give more detail :)

I'd say either fly or get a sleeper train if they exist. I'd say the train trip is around 10 hours.

Thanks for the very helpful replies guys! It was exactly what I was looking for. I am out there mid January so shall take on-board what's been said.

I think flying will be my best option and will keep and eye out for that happy hour :) ..I thought a tickets would cost in the region of 100 pounds or so!

Greatly appreciated

Hey Jay,

Definitely, fly between Sydney & Melbourne is you are there for that short of time. Both cities have so much to offer and I would advise to check out Manly instead of Bondi when in Sydney (personal preference) but you get to experience the world famous harbour by the ferry instead of going on a tour. You can also book fun things to do at . Have a great time! You will have a blast!

You should definitely fly between Sydney and Melbourne and not waste your time on a bus or train.

As for Sydney, with such a short time you should just do the usual stuff. Go walking around the city, head east and walk towards Darlinghurst and Potts Point. Take a train to Bondi Junction and then the bus to Bondi and walk to the headland at south Bondi and you'll get some stunning views down the coast.

Walk through the Botanical Gardens down by the Opera House. On the other side of Circular Quay, walk through the Rocks area and just go wandering.

I can't give you advice for Melbourne as I'm not familliar with it at all.
