I am just about to move over to Perth to see if I can find work in the mining industry. I have a few contacts but I was wondering if anyone can give me some handy info.
I am 31yo female and will be travelling across Oz by car.
Thanking you kindly in Advance..
Heya, did the same thing myself last november, heaps of work in perth, in mining, or just in regular jobs. You will have more trouble finding a house than work! buy a newspaper when you get here and pick what you want to do
Personally prefer the southern suburbs, around freo, bit less traffic, nicer to live.
Best of luck!
Thank you so much for that information,
I understand that there are several hostels in Perth so that would be a good place to start for accomodation.
I would prefer to go straight into the mines, but I do understand that it may be a lengthy process.
I'm not sure what sort of work you are looking for but you could try for a job in hospitality/camp management. Companies like ESS and Spotless provide cooking/housekeeping services for a lot of mines in the Pilbara, and the Goldfields. The work will generally be FIFO, and rosters tend to vary a bit but where I have worked (as a geologist) they were on 2 weeks on and 1 week off.
If you let us know what type of work you were looking for then I'll try and offer some more suggestions!
Thanks for your response,
I was thinking about taking the hospitality approch just to get my foot in the door, from there I would probably look at getting my tickets to be a plant operator, from what I hear they prefer women to drive the dump trucks.
I have already contacted Compass-Group and am booked in for a training session on August 28th.
My experience is as follows:
Anything admin really (I have been looking at field assistant roles also but from what I have discovered so far they require 6 months exp. in the same type of role)
By the sounds of what you have said in your last post, the hospitality rosters seem very suitable the lifestyle I am after. I will look into the leads and see what I come up with.
I need information from anyone working, or who is in contact with anyone working in the mining industry. Preferrably someone who is in the dump truck driving department. Can anyone help?
