Just wondering how do you feel about when travelling to Kuala Lumpur?
Some people say that the violence and the crime rate there is high!!

probably one of the safest in the world.

I have been there a few times and never felt threatened at all. Violent crime is rare in KL and the rest of Malaysia. In KL you have to beware of pick pockets, bag snatchings etc, as with all major cities, but as SweptAway says, I'd say it has to be one of the safest cities in the world.

Yes, can be considered safe if you compare to Johannesburg;)

KL is a comparitively safe city to visit.

That doesn't mean it's crime free though. Take the usual big city safety precautions.

i'm a KL dweller.

i think the above advice applies...
just be precautious.

most tourist areas are safe... unlikely to get rob or motor-snatching daylight

I CHANGE MY MIND... BE CAREFUL!!!

It will be my 4th night... I walk every night and enjoy getting lost in the urban maze of buildingS and jungles... But last night something strange happened. So I have to ask you guys about it.

Location: Bukid Bintang, its the like the POSH version of cheap KHAO SAN road.
My friends have been living in Malaysia for years. We are all Malay looking and I'm a bit Indian lately. An Indian guy was following us and calling our attention. His VOICE was angry and intimidating. He was giving us the look like we did something so wrong. We thought he was angry because we refuse to take the TAXIs that are parked on the side walk, waiting to prey on caucasian tourist.

By instincts, I told my friends to rush to the nearest bar. I got in becoz of my Indian hairstyle, my friends were not admited because of an entrance fee. The guy was still on the street outside the bar /club area. I did all the talking, my friends who are practically locals were clueless. It pays to sound American, they do listen. Otherwise they would kick us off the street. I asked the all-Indian staff of the bar to tell us what that evil creature wants. They had a long talk and the guard said, he doesn't know what the guy wants. I started acting like a bitchy American tourist and demanded an explanation or else I will sing a Britney Spears medley. So the manager came over and talk to the tourism terrorist, still waiting for us to set foot on his road. They talk for a while. He came back and I ask him what does he want. He acted like he could hardly speak English. He said the man said "That my female friend is...." and he cant find the word. so I said "SOULMATE?" I assume it was a stalker! he said no, and then he just said the man wanted to ask how much is the LIFE of my female friend.

If he wanted sexual favors, we can take it as a complement. If he thought my friend is a ho and I'm a pimp. I won't be too scared. But they were up to something. And it is possible that some of these bars cooperate with these street creatures. An Indian waiter just told us to leave. Just take a cab and go... Because after that man left. Another scary looking Indian came over. He was looking at us and talks to the Indian manager. He complaining about something and he was very angry.
My hotel was very close that place and I still want to go to a club. But I had to leave with my friends.

I know they were trying to intimidate us. So I told my friends to stay cool and act like we are as ruthless as our tormentors. It doesn't take much of an effort to be a bitch, it saves lives.

I am not writing this not say bad things about other people or the Indians. I just want to know if you guys know of this??? I mean, is this something like a scam or a gang, or mafia. NO WONDER on my 2 nights in Bintang Bukid, I noticed there were lots of POLICE MEN. I didnt like their presence, because I thought its like attaching security cameras in a Bangkok go go bar. But now I assume that the police were there, because what happened to me last night, happened to other people.

That was really freaky. KL is a very beautiful Asian city and I cant imagine it being dangerous. I am still staying for another night. But I dont feel safe anymore.

What did he want from us? What did we do wrong? Why was he so brave to make an attempt to rob or kill us in the presence of other people (the bar security, the manager and the waiters.)

Oh My God!! That is scary~~~ When I was in Kuala Lumpur, near the Petalling Street i felt so insecure. I don't know if I was look strange to them. Many locals were just looking at us from one point to another...That made me walk faster and faster and just wanna escape from their sight...
I hope everything will be fine with u. Enjoy the rest of the trip and stay save!

I was kidnapped and robbed in Kuala Lumpur back in 2005, but managed to escape losing a small amount of cash. Apart from that, the day before I felt safe and the day after although I was a bit wary after the previous days happenings I didn't feel too unsafe. I don't plan on going back any time in this lifetime though.

Yes, currently KL is a bit dangerous. Just need to be caution.
