In London I would recommend Lancaster Hall Hotel in Lancaster Gate, which is part of YMCA. They have so called Youth Wing rooms, that are reasonably priced. Location is suberb (a few mins from Hyde Park and the tube) and rooms are super tidy and quiet. Is this something you are after?

I stayed at a hostel called Maubuisson in Paris, just next to Notre Dame in a very quiet neighbourhood. It's pretty plain, but clean and the location is amazing.

Maubuisson is nice, but I like Fauconnier better. They are both part of the same three hostel group MIJE. You could probably find something a bit cheaper, but I wouldn't know what to recommend for that. Heard good things about the Aloha. Good Luck!

I have been looking for Hostels as well... I found that you can search for and book beds for Hostels on this site... pretty cool. They are rated... and You can search by price, availability, rating etc... some Hostels are really bare bones... and some are quite luxurious, like the Palmer in London... lah-dee-dah. You can't beat the prices though. Wooo-hooo!

Be sure to check the age requirements, as well. Not sure how old you are... but many are only 18-35 yrs... no older no younger... with only one or two (that I saw) opened up to the ungodly age of.... 45!!!. : )

I am also finding that I left things a little too late... and the female only dorms are booked, so only mixed dorms are left. Seems there are plenty of beds for gents...

Good luck in your search!

St. Christopher's is probably the best hostel I've stayed at in Paris. It's very clean, modern and spacious and is right next to the Bassin de la Villette (lake) in the North-East of the city so has a nice relaxed atmosphere around it.

As far as London goes, Palmer's Lodge gets rave reviews from everyone I know who's been there
