Thanks in Advance,

Hello Em!

I can't give you much advice about cheaper alternatives because I'm new to this myself, but I am currently in Australia and went through BUNAC/IEP, so I can give you a look into my experience with them.

I had a little trouble trying to figure out who to go through, but I finally settled on them because they're well known and seemed to offer some great services. I have to say I highly recommend them. They helped me with my visa, transportation, accommodation, and they offer other great services, such as an office with free internet, luggage storage, mail forwarding, and greatest of all - a staff ready and willing to answer all your questions and be there in case of emergency. Oh, and automatic YHA membership too - which offers great discounts to plenty of places and attractions.

When you consider all of the above, I think the program pretty much pays for itself. I think especially for someone who's not familiar with the area, it's well worth it.

I would love to hear about your New Zealand experience - that sounds like an amazing destination! I hope to be able to make it over there.

Mel

I'm somewhat knowledgeable on the subject as I used to work for IEP (BUNAC's partner in NZ/Oz) back in 2000. I know that for a few years there was another company that did inbound programs into NZ, but they've now closed down and moved all their business to IEP. So, as far as I know, if you want to go with a 'group' and have a support network on the ground when you arrive, then IEP (and thus their partners overseas, incl. BUNAC in the UK) is the only option at this time. There might be hostels and such that offer 'packages', but that's not really the same thing as a company that helps bring in thousands of individuals every year and runs orientations for them.

If you are looking for cheaper, you should be able to just buy the visa like Hien linked to. But that's not really comparable to travelling with BUNAC etc.

BUNAC/IEP is not the only "group" option at this time. From the UK, there is also CCUSA in the UK (host company in both New Zealand & Australia is Work & Travel Company). Haven't a clue what they're like though.

Like Sam I Am, I've also worked for IEP - in fact, I have worked for BUNAC in the UK too!

mojorob, WTC closed down in New Zealand and moved their business over to IEP about 2 years ago. CCUSA sold their operation in Australia a few years ago and the buyer wasn't WTC or IEP (some other company I can't remember the name of but who still runs it as far as I know). CCUSA sends to their old centre there, they don't use WTC or IEP. I don't think CCUSA ever had their own operation in NZ, so I'm pretty sure IEP is the only choice in NZ. Of course they might have multiple partners in the UK though....

Oh really? In that case, CCUSA better update their website! It currently shows that from CCUSA in the UK they send to WTC in Aus & NZ. It was the only other such place I was aware of in New Zealand.

Maybe the people that were running WTC's operation (it was run by a backpackers travel agency so was never anywhere near what IEP offered...) kept it going for some partners, but all the ones I know were shifted over to IEP. Mind you, it's been a while since I checked out the CCUSA situation in detail :)
