I will be in London and may need to rent a car, anyone has any suggestions about renting in general in England..... what to watch for (if any), or most important where?! I was told not in a city, as I will pay more (surcharge)..... anyone has any idea best areas, places to rent from?!
I've had a few good deals from Enterprise before. Best thing to do is visit various websites of car rental firms in the UK and get quotes - and also book online, because you can often get it cheaper doing it that way!
Other firms include:
Make sure you take a good look at what is being quoted to you - i.e. mileage, insurance cover (they usually try to sell more at the time of collection) etc. Probably best to not book at an airport location, and possibly avoid central London! Get quotes online from a few locations and you may see differences.
Oh - and also most car rentals in the UK have a manual transmisison rather than automatic. If you want automatic rental firms may charge more if they have any available!
Zipcar is now in London. Zipcar is the large American carshare group with cars parked in different locations around each city (generally in central areas of many large American & Canadian cities, and now in London too). All of the Zipcars are automatic and are generally small fuel efficient models such as the Scion, Honda or Mini Cooper (also pickups and vans). You must join first, then you reserve a car online, use your membership card to open the door, and away you go! It's currently $9. an hour, but gas and insurance are included. The keys and gas credit card are inside the car already. Once you're a member, you can reserve and drive any car anywhere there's a Zipcar in any of the cities.
