What is the best things to do if your credit cards are lost or stolen in South America and you have no money? Also, the same if this happens to your passport. I imagine you go to the nearest immigration office.

not sure about your credit cards, but I have just read an email from a friend who is currently in South America, and she lost her passport in Bolivia. She said she had to get a police report and then go to the British Embassy in La Paz. she said it took a couple of days to sort it out but it was pretty straightforward and she now has a temporary passport.

A few sensible things to do:

1. scan your passport now and e-mail the scanned picture to yourself so that you will always have a note of your passport number etc.
2. also e-mail yourself a few telephone numbers for your bank.

my debit card was stolen and I called the Nationwide and they were able to call me back in Argentina as to save me spending more than necessary on the phone call. I guess it depends if you are lucky enough to get someone nice on the other end of the call though.

Embassay is always the best place to go.
