A Backpacker's Trial

Alright, I am in need of advice:

I arrived in Sydney a couple weeks ago on a 4-month work visa with a plan of living and working here for the majority of that time. Now that I am here, however, the idea of backpacking up the coast is starting to appeal to me over working in some job not unlike one I could do at home. BUT I've never done something like that before, and I need to be earning money in order to survive. (Plus, I am a young female worried about obvious possible dangers.)

A friend I met here is also interested in that but faces the same money and stability issues that I do, so we are thinking of doing a trial run together for a week or so, after which, if it doesn't work out, we get our jobs in the city. Does anyone have any advice or ideas as to where we should go (not incredibly far from the Sydney area) and what type of job we could get in that short amount of time?

Hey Mel,

It's pretty cold in the Sydney region at the moment, is far North Queensland an option for you? To be honest I think around Sydney is pretty boring in winter, it's too cold to do anything outdoors and not cold enough for snow. You could try heading to the Blue Mountains for a trial you're into hiking and scenery or head up the coast to Coffs Harbour where it will be warmer, but not warm enough to swim. I think the fun starts at Byron Bay, and extends all the way to Cairns.

Not sure what kind of work you could get for a week, you might try waitressing at a cafe or something?

Hope this helps....

Tim
