Hello,

I am planning a trip to Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia and I am thinking about travelling alone. I have travelled to Europe by myself and found it enjoyable. I was wondering if travelling asia alone was about the same for those of you who have done both? Is meeting fellow travellers at hostel also similar to Europe. I do not want to sound ignorant but I wass wondering the difference. Thanks!

I think you will find that the scene is very similar - all the budget conscious travelers hang out at the same places, ask ? of each other, and really depend on one another for the latest/best info. It certainly is a pleasure in SEA, and at least in Viet and Thai the tourist facilities are so well set up that it's a real pleasure (why can't we set up something similar in the US - we're so backward in many ways really!) As for myself, I had this image, before my first trip, of SEA as so very mysterious and different from the rest of the world - come to find out just the opposite really. I was amazed to find how "normal" the scene in Vietnam - very hard to think of that country as our former enemy - such a gentle people, how could we think of dropping bombs there???

You shouldn't have too much of a problem. I have been in and out of those countries off and on for over 12 years traveling alone most of the time with no real problems. I have come across women in their 70's and 80's traveling alone and having a good old time! Like the previous post says - you will definitely get more for your money in Asia compared to Europe!

As far as meeting people, there are hostels and budget hotels that many backpackers hang out at. Some places are easier to find fellow travelers and some other places less easy. But there is lots to see and do no matter what.
Good luck.

I think that you for sure would have much pleasure traveling to Viet Nam. As a student in Ha Noi city, per day I meet a lot of foreigners here at our streets, or sometime on the buses. Vietnamese ppl are very friendly and hospitable, we will dying to help those who want to discover our country with many nice scenes. Traveling alone in Viet Nam, you don't have to worry about safety and cost because of the stable politic and low expenditure. A long with Ha Noi and HoChiMinh city, you can visit many worth-seeing spots ranging from cultural heritages such as The Imperial city of Hue, Hoi An ancient town, My Son holy land to natural world heritages such as Ha Long bay, Phong Nha cave in Quang Binh and enormous beautiful landscape. In a word, Viet Nam is probably an ideal destination for those who love discovering and adventuring. If you want to get some suggestions for your interesting tours in VN, here are truly some useful sites: -snip-
