Hi just wondering if anyone can help me. I'll be on the West coast next summer and don't want to leave without seeing the Grand Canyon, but I'll be too young to hire a car. So does anyone know what the cheapest/easiest ways to get there would be I'm guessing it'll be bus, but from which city - I've planned to stop in San Fran, LA and San Diego but haven't decided where else yet.

Thanks

A rental car would be expensive, although the most pactical way to go. You also could take a plane to Flgstaff, then a tour bus trip. Or fly into Las Vegas and a tour bus trip. The Grnd Canyon is a drive trip and either you are on a bus or in a car.
other options I know of but are not familiar with:

good luck.

Consider Amtrak train Southwest Chief eastbound. The train leaves Los Angeles and stops at Flagstaff, Arizona where you can get a motor coach to the Grand Canyon. Timetable: http://www.amtrak.com/timetable/may08/P03.pdf
This is a reserved train, do note that you will need to make your motor coach reservations at the same time you ticket.

either flying to vegas and taking a tour bus from there or amtrak is your best bet

my suggestion:

1- take a plane or a bus from LA to Las Vegas - flying should be cheap and fast
2- take a tour from Las Vegas - it's gonna be pretty expensive though

Ham Radio's advice is spot-on. Amtrak is the best way for you to go.

If money is an issue...look at the cost of taking a Greyhound Bus from LA to Williams, Arizona, (The most direct route from CA). Then check out the railway from Williams to the Grand Canyon; http://www.thetrain.com/ This should be much more reasonable than a tour out of Las Vegas or even the Amtrak to Flagstaff, which still leaves you 2 hours from the South Rim of the canyon.

Judith,
Your cheapest option is a 15 hour bus trip from Vegas. Take a look and see if it might be
your best choice.

myself and a friend saw the Grand Canyon without driving a few years ago. We got the Greyhound to Flagstaff, and then there are more than enough people wanting to offer you lifts to the GC at the greyhound station. We refused all of them, cos our (slightly out of date) Lonely Planet said there was as shuttle bus to the Canyon, we then found that it had stopped in the past year. So we rang up a company from a leaflet we found in a hostel, and it ended up being 2 of the guys that were offering us a lift from the station. We camped overnight, and they picked us up the next day.
