Australia has edged above Great Britain to be in third place!

Pushed back down to the fourth place by Team GB!

Great Britain is 3 countries! Best give them a handicap eh?

As for medals, Australia has 33 and these 3 countries can only manage a combined 27 medals.

Exactly. I've been wondering why it wasn't called Team UK instead.

BTW, many countries out there have a small UK flag on one quarter of their flags. So I guess 25% of the medals should go to Team UK. Hand them over, Team Australia!

Unfortunately, these 'countries' with the UK flag on the upper canton of their flags do not account for that many medals at the Olympics. They are mostly small, Caribbean islands that make infrequent appearances. Unless of course, you're referring to Australia and New Zealand, two independent countries that still keep the Union Jack.

Its only cos these countries are way too lazy to design thier own flags!

Canada had the Union Jack on our flag until the 60s. Actually, quite a few provinces have a Union Jack on their flags still... hmm... Can we share in the UK medal count too???

(And Canada's up to 10 medals! Yippee! I come home every night and catch the very beginnings of the events, then wake up to see us crawling up the ranks slowly! Poor Neal--he's bored out of his mind except when rooting for the occassional Irish runner ).

Great Britain is not 3 countries. Wales is a Principality and England and Scotland joined together in 1707 to become 1 country. But our Olympic team should be called team United Kingdom as Northern Ireland is also with us in the Olympics but Northern Ireland is not a part of Great Britain, which is just the main island of the British Isles.

BTW we won 3 more golds today!!! GB is now storming ahead of Australia.

Ooops, just seen we got another gold, that makes 16 now

Oh and I have just read that Northern Ireland is not an Olympic Member, but Great Britain is, therefore they have to compete under the Great Britain team.

The counter on the CBC site puts Britain in 3rd (and Canada is tied for 12th place with the Netherlands with 13 medals--yayyy!!!!!).

The table on the official Olympic site puts GB in 3rd at the moment. It's only US news websites that don't - they've all gone for the total number of medals so that they can show USA above China in the table. Fair play to the Ozzies - their sites show the official table even though it shows them below GB.
