Could you get by on a budget with this? How much would you need to do a 12 month RTW trip?

Depends where you intend to go and your transport method? What type of accommodation you prefer, hotels, hostels etc. ?

As long as you concentrate on SEA, India and the undeveloped world.

Should be fine in Australia and North America too, just as long as you don't travel around too much (transport will be your biggest cost there) - and don't have to pay the RTW ticket from that 18,000. (e.g. have that amount purely as spending money during the trip).

Have you considered getting a small tent and camping gear? Of course, depending upon your destinations taking a tent might be pointless. But from my experience I think you could get away with either camping wild, staying in the backyard of hostels or on camping sites - all which is a lot cheaper. As a rule you pay 5-15 EUR per night in hostels and cheap hotels in undeveloped countries and around 20-30 EUR for hostels in developed countries. Now imagine paying half or nothing for accomodation 30 % of the time of your trip, all thanks to taking a tent and camping gear. Do the math - looks great, doesn't it?
