So many people seem to cross America by driving. Granted it would be fun, but I think I'd want to kill my boyfriend by the end of it. SO when I read this it totally changed my opinion of visiting cowboy country.
Looks awesome, and a great way to meet people along the way. Anyone esle done this? How does it compare to driving?
I do agree that it beats driving (driving across Texas is a total bore!). At least on Amtrak you can sit down with one of their overpriced beers and package of chips and enjoy the desert. We also have cowboys/rodeos in the Northwest, and the scenery is quite a bit better up here. I suggest the Empire Builder from Chicago to Portland/Seattle - it stops right in Glacier National Park.
You must realize that Amtrak is a poorly run system with very old equipment - do not expect too much glitter (more grime there). I would ride in segments rather than going the whole route at once. (warning: bring your own cooler of food/drinks - Amtrak food is BAD!)
People are very nice on the train, and it is a nice alternative to driving. Highly recommended.
Train beats a murder rap any day of the week!
