Me and a friend(s) will be going to Amsterdam at the start of October for my birthday. We have our fligts booked and will arrive at 9.00am. We have no accomodation booked yet and was wondering if anyone has any good recomendations for a hotel? Maybe somthing a bit different...? But not too pricey! (In a lively area) I fancy checking out some dutch bars and night clubs too if you know any good ones, and anything else that might me amusing for the four days im there...

thank you!

Seany, I am going to Amsterdam in early October too! We will be there October 13-October 16. We are probably going to stay at the Flying Pig Downtown hostel. I havent stayed there before, but it looks lively and close to everything. Its only about $20AU a night so its very cheap!

Hope this helps! Also, if you are there the same time as me, we could meet up..

Have fun

Hey Ozzie!

Thanks for your tips. Regarding dates I land on the the 7th & leave on the 11th, so we are just gonna miss each other!
Have a wicked time anyway, take care.

you should try and get a hostel/hotel near the leidseplein, thats the most lively area of amsterdam. there are LOTS of bars and clubs aroudn there... but i dont raelly know what kinda bars youre after!

if you wanna smoke something id recommend abraxis coffeeshop which is pretty close to the dam square (google it for the addy i cant remember).

for going out then ask the locals where paradiso is - its great! but you gotta pay to get in... cooldown cafe is fun if youve already had a few drinks! the melkweg is also good if you like live music...

on the rembrandtplein there are also lots of places to go out - cocos is just off the rembrandtplein but has happyhour with half price cocktails and cheap pints from 5-6 and 22-23... theres also a bar on the warmoesstr near the red light district, called belushis which does 2 for 1 drinks (stella, vodka, jack daniels and... gin? i forget).

Really weird place Amsterdam, watch out for people trying to con you, sell you drugs etc... they are masters at it...

Fair culture shock from Britain....zombied out people everywhere in the red light district. I remember thinking, 'wow this is literally hell' when i went there until i got used to it..

As for accom try for reviews..maybe...

funny thing is, its mostly brits who are the zombied out ones in the RLD... and americans, but mostly brits...

There's so much more in Amsterdam than drugs and red light street. I'm a nice woman in my early thirties and it is my favorite city. Whatever you do, don't get wrapped in the red light + smoking my head of, cause you'll miss a lot!

its my fave place too but i lived there for almost 2 years. its better to live there than be a tourist, but its SO ANNOYING to see ppl go there only got the drugs and the hookers. theres alot more to amsterdam.. yeah its a part of it, but its not all of it...

vondelpark is a great place to go and hang out, take ur lunch and a few drinks and ppl watch. maybe the hare krishnas will give you cake :) at least youll hear ppl playing music, see em playing hackey/football or just check out the interesting characters that hang around there!

the nieuwmarkt (where cafe de waag is - big castle looking thing in the middle of the square a few streets past the RLD) is great for eating out, if youre with a few of you, go to cafe nieuwmarkt, you can share a tapas plate and fondue for €7 each (if theres 4 of you)...

the heineken museum is boring, and €11 but you get a few beers in between - to make it more worth it try n scam the bartenders for more beer, or ask ppl with no drink in their hand for their token...

there are places you can go which are student bars which sell chep beer but theyre hard to find, or you cant get in without a dutch student card (like dansen bij jansen)... there are alot of hole in the wall bars which fire up after about midnite packed full of students, or little dj bars with really cool music... you just have to ask the locals and hunt around!

i just got back from amsterdam..had a bit of a tour of holland in general really..went to a few gigs out there..

ive been to holland too many times to remember how many and have lived out there just over a decade ago...i dont know if its because i know what to expect, but this time round it seemed like the "lovable" street urchins had been pretty much cleared from the main tourist areas...
i have been to many different hotels in amsterdam...would need to know your budget tho before reeling them off...places ive stayed in have ranged from the biggest shitholes to the best hotel in amsterdam "NS amsterdam central"..they even let you smoke in there, tho it is like something out of the 22nd century..i had to phone reception for instructions on how to put the lights on! lol

Without a doubt theres gonna be more to see than the red light district. Im gona stay in Leidseplein and hit some the less sleazy bars and clubs and see what the dutch are really about!
