Hazza80 has indicated that this thread is about Australia

Hey! I am a newbee at this and am quite daunted I was wondering if I could get some advice from experienced Oz travellers.

I am off to Oz in Nov for on a 1 year working visa and will only have around £4000 after flights. I am arriving Melbourne to stay with an old mate for a week, then go via Sydney to the Gold Coast and beyond. I do plan to work when I get to Byron Bay (after relaxing for a few days!) and would be looking to stay there for 3 months (to become expert surf chic) before moving on to the Whitsundays where I plan to stay and work for a further 6 months.

Is £4000 enough? Will I be able to find work to keep me going for the year? Is there any way of finding short term cheap accom that aren't youth hostels. How hard will it be to find work, accomodation and make ends meet? Is there any possibility that I could actually SAVE money so I can continue to travel to the South Pacific Islands or am I being overly hopeful?

Many thanks for expert advice! :)

Hazza

PS... Anyone else going out in Nov?

Hi Hazza,

4000 pounds = $8400 (roughly). I think that'd be plenty of money for a trip, including domestic flights. While I don't think that would sustain you over the entire year period, working should cover your rent and you should have enough money for a bit of travel, shopping and partying.

Finding work in Byron shouldn't be too hard (I was there last week and there were a couple signs up in stores looking for people), and there should be lots of work further north. If you're really keen on saving money, I'd recommend getting a second job or one job that allows you to work a lot of hours..

Hope all goes well :)

Cheers Lou!

How did you find Byron Bay? I hear it's really chilled ;)

Do you or anyone else know about cheap accomodation? That is a main concern ...

Thanx guys!

Hazza

Byron is absolutely blissful. It's just a relaxing town, still maintains it's 'hippy' reputation and has a beautiful beach!
There are also some great restaurants too.

There are a couple hostels in Byron, try and get ones closer into town near Jonson St, as thats the main street...YHA hostels are always good, and usually centrally located, so it may be worth giving that a google..

Best of luck :)

if you don't want to stay in hostels, maybe you can find share accomodation?
from the looks of it, there should be quite a number of people at byron bay on short term employment, so there should be quite a few people sharing apartments and such.

Hey Hazza

Unfortunately, no, I'm not in Byron Bay at the moment. Wish I was though... hahah

About accommodation, you can easily search that on Australian rental sites like realestate.com.au, they haev a tab that you can select to search for ads for share accommodation only.

I hope it helps!!
Are you packed and ready?? It'll be great, don't worry about it. Once you land, you'll absorb the relax Australian atmosphere and you'll calm down a fair bit. hahah

Good luck!!!
