Hi All,

I'm not sure if this topic has been covered already but i couldn't find anything!

I am going travelling in January for about 6 months, in this time i will be taking in SE Asia, Bali, Australia, Fiji and L.A - in total i will have 7 flights the only problem i have is that i am absolutely petrified of flying!!:(

I dread getting on a plane and cant relax the whole time i am on it... i am determined not to let this spoil my trip but if anyone had any advice i would really appreciate it.

Any tips for flying, advice etc would be most appreciated!

Thank you in advance,

Rachel

I won't mention the buses in SEA so... they are much worse. Seriously don't let it get on top of you. If it helps write a blog, let loose you anxieties. That helps believe me I berated a certain European bus company on my blog and it felt a lot better.

Take an mp3 player with you on the flight and listen to some music, it will help put your mind elsewhere.

OR, a little secret I learned to pass time is to download a learn another language mp3. When you are on board, tell the flight attendants you are anxious about flying. Some of the better attendants will often check on you, and having some friendly contact is good.

Turn on your language learning (or music) mp3 and loose yourself in that world. That's why I like the language learning thing. IT helps you to concentrate on something else.

A book can also help if you prefer to read.

The statistics are still in your favor for flying over land. With seven flights you should at least be fluent in Fijian by the time you get there!!

Hope this helps

Lavender essential oil is amazing for calming nerves. You could probably get away with taking a small bottle with you on the flight, but if not soak a handkerchief in it and keep in in a sealed bag. Then just sniff as needed.

I have friends who have been prescribed Valium for fear of flying, where it was a genuine phobia. Obviously you'd only take this route if it were really serious, and you'd have to check out the potential medical consequences, but I'm raising it for info. I can vouch for the fact that it works (having travelled with a 'before' and 'after' case).

Not sure if you've booked your tickets yet, but if you haven't... you could try going by boat or travelling overland. Sometimes it's possible to book a cabin on a freighter ship. It's a much slower way of getting around, but I'm sure you'd meet some interesting people.

This guy travelled around the world with his partner, without ever setting foot in a plane.

The only real way is to have a few alcoholic drinks before you get on the plane. Dutch courage works wonders.

I was also going to suggest not flying. It's worked for me!

Hi

ive only been on a flight once and i admit i shit it, even though it was only for 2 hours

ive got a 10 hour to Vancouver in november to look forward to and i will mst definetly have a drink or two before i fly, i suppose the way i see it is im getting the f**k out of my country and have so much to do and people to meet i suppose it cancels any flight fears out..

well im no seasoned traveller, but ive got to the point to where if i dont do it now, i never will

roll on november and happy travelling to ya :)

Any docs in the UK will write you up a prescription for xanax or sweet valley highs

May I suggest, "fake it till you make it'.
Basically, tell yourself that you love to fly. Tell everyone else you do. Act like you do. Then one day...it's true! Just don't let your fear make your decisions for you or you'll end up with huge regrets one day.
