Can anyone give me on average on how long it takes to get through customs at MAN? I'm flying in at 06:45 (September 9th, if that helps) and trying to catch a train at 07:37. It's a pipe dream, isn't it?
I've been through Manchester before, but for the life of me I can't remember how long it took.
You should be just about OK if the flight arrives bang on time, but you're not leaving yourself any room for error.
It should be reasonably quiet for arrivals at that time in the morning, but you would be better off not banking on catching that particular train if at all possible, you never know what hold-ups there might be. Have you bought a ticket already, and if so, is it flexible?
That's what I figured, though you've given me more hope than I started with. I haven't bought the ticket yet, but my next choice puts me behind a few, dare I say it, *critical* hours. It's possible to by an advance ticket that's also flexible? Thanks, magykal1.
Yes - 'Saver' category advance purchase tickets are valid on any off-peak train, which should be most trains from Manchester Airport I think. It's only special discounted rate tickets that are valid only for specific trains.
You can also buy 'Standard Open' advance purchase tickets that are valid on any train, but they tend to be phenomenally expensive.
If your plane is on time you should just about be ok. I have arrived at Manchester Airport many times in the last 2 years or so, and the problem tends to be at immigration rather then customs, as the queues have been enormous recently, both for EU and non-EU passport holders. I have queued for around 20-30 minutes the last few times I have been through, but that should still leave you just enough time to get the train provided your baggage is quick to come through.
Thank you, Bex76. I am approaching this in a much more hopeful manner now.
Good luck - hope it runs smoothly.
