Surely it's better for the NHS to pay for your jabs before you go rather than for the NHS to pay for treatment when you return for anything you may have picked up?

I've always thought that - and I think the NHS do supply the majority of vaccinations to the GP surgeries for free - it is the surgeries themeselves that charge - I'm never too sure if that money goes back to the NHS or to the receptionists binge drinking habits on friday nights....

Something else which may help you is how you talk to them. If you say you the jabs because you are buggering off to be a drunken backpacker for a year, they will often make you pay. If you say you want to get it just to be safe/because of blah/you are going to work on a charity project in a dangerous place/you need to prove it before a job interview or some such, you'll often get them (or, at least, typhoid/hep a+b etc) for free.
