Hello everybody,

my and my friend going to india on oct-nov for five weeks and we would like to do some kind of volunteering with children. The problem is the high fees for participating in some programes, so maybe anyone could reccomend some links to volunteering programs for free. I mean our trip tickets, accom, food we will pay by ourselvs, but no additional fees.

Thank You for your kind attention.

Sorry I don't have any links. But what I can tell you is that once you arrive you will find plenty of places asking for volunteers with no fees. Some will provide accommodation too. I didn't volunteer there myself but met others who did this and all was fine.

The same goes for Nepal. I met a lot of people who paid thousands through agency's and the like to volunteer. Only to get there and find people doing it for free.

This is just brief reply. But also be aware that not all volunteer positions are good. Sometimes those offering free positions are running a pretty bad organization. Having said that, a lot of paid places too gave me the creeps.

In other words, check out the place as much as possible and don't go with the first one.

If your seriously stuck send me a message and I'll contant someone I know who volunteered in India for free and had a good time.

All the best

Give me sometime and I'll get back to you.
But before I start I have some queries for you.

Which places do you plan to visit in India ?
What kind of work are you looking for ? e.g. teaching, arts & crafts, music, dance etc. or volunteer in any work. What kind of work have you done before ?
How many of you are coming over ?

You can message me if interested further and I am sure I can guide you on this.

Cheers !

We planing to stay somewhere near Shimla or in Sikkim.
The best would be work with children, teaching or smth, couse i have some expierence with childrens and i know hindi too.
Also we prefer to live and volunteer in some rural area, but i think everything will depend on situation.
I think we will be two.

Hey guys,

great advice you should really look through a few volunteering possibilities before choosing and I've downright refused to pay those huge sums most organisations for volunteering (on google at least!) but saying that if you're doing it first time STA travel packages are supposed to be good.
The two places I volunteered around India were in Godawari, Nepal at an orphanage, and Mcleod Ganj, Dharamsala, north India as a head english teacher. The one in Dharamsala my sister found in lonely planet I think and we just went to the volunteer office and were welcomed with open arms.
So my main piece of advice is to look for volunteering offices in the area, and do your homework, and enjoy it!! My happiest times were definitely volunteering in India. If you want specific details on either of these let me know.

Best of luck and much love,
