as a beginner in traveling, which is better? to follow some guided traveling tour, or to simply start and explore with backpacking?

I would always say to just start 'backpacking', although things can always be combined of course. For example a small tour to get used to the country. Especially when it's a country where travelling around is just a bit harder or where you don't speak the language.
Where do you want to go?

I'd say travel using a tour package if your a first timer... specially if it's a first time international trip... at least you'd have a feel of how to go around an international airport... then on the next trip try to create your own trip...

well, i'm planning for a first time trip bali, indonesia. i just don't wanna screw up my trip as a beginner because i'm not sure what to do there (apart from beach activities). good point for me in tour group is everything is well planned out. but good point for me in backpacking is i can speak the local language (although i'm not an indonesian) which enables me to get closer to the culture for a better experience.
hmph- confusing...

How long are you going for? I agree with Utrecht - maybe you could join a 2or3 day tour to get you settled in and have everything sorted for a bit and then go out on your own? My fiance and I are travelling for the first time next month for a year, and we've booked a 16daytour to get us through russia, mongolia to beijing - the tour only actually includes accommodation, transport, transfers and local guides - it also gave us all the letter of invitations needed for these countries to get visa's - we are also hoping to meet people if possible we can continue to travel with for a bit or meet later - but that might not happen... I don't know about the visa situation in Indonesia - but I wouldn't imagine it would be as tough as russia and china in particular, but for peace of mind and the chance to meet other travellers it may be worth it! Saying all that, if you know the language you'll be at a massive advantage compared with us

Enjoy your trip

Are you going on your own, Zach?
If you're going with a group of friends it could be an adventure, throwing yourself in the deep end and backpacking it.
The safer option would be the tour, though.
