Hey there!

I need some advice on croatia in september...

ive heard hostels arent that plentiful - what are the other options? im on a really tight budget. i'll be camping, couchsurfing and hostelling when i have no other choice!

im getting the ferry from venice to pula on the 17th sep, and then i have no plans until i fly outta split on the 30th...

already decided to bypass split and see dubrovnik, and then come back to split a day before i fly out, ive heard its VERY touristy, more expensive and full of aussies. bah. im aussie myself soi can say that ;)

id love any camping tips, tips on where to go and what not to bother with... im pretty sure im gonna skip zagreb... im a bit over cities and feel like its just gonna be another city, and its out of my way... pls tell me if im wrong!

thanks in advance!

Hey there Jaxstar84,

lucky old you, off to Croatia, this is the first year I've missed in 7.
Firstly you're right, hostels aren't that plentiful, but, seeing as how you're going to miss the main tourist season - weather should still be great though - you won't have a problem finding budget accomodation. Any town I've ever arrived in I just asked at the bus station, tourist office or local bar and tell them my budget.... there's always someone who has a place for the money you have to spend.

I don't know if you realise how far it is from Pula to Dubrovnik, even short distances in Croatia by bus can take a long time due to the number of stops and the indentations of the coastline.

I'd take a ferry to split - or a bus - pop out to Hvar (1 hour) or Korcula (3 hours'ish) spend a day or two on the islands head to Dubrovnik - get ripped off - joking, it's well worth the visit, and then travel back up north stopping at the places that have taken your fancy on the way South, there'll be plenty of them.

Zagreb is out of your way definitely, but well worth a trip another time. If you like peace and quiet try the ferry from Dubrovnik to the Island of Mjlet, doesn't get much quieter, blue skies, blue seas, cold beers as the sun sets, dolphins leaping from the water..... Damn, I have to go this year!!!

Anyway enjoy your trip, if you have any specific questions you can PM me.
