I am beginning to look for a hostel to stay in, in Sydney.
I have been reading up on the areas of Kings Cross, Sydney Central and Darlinghurst. I have decided that I want to stay near a lively area like my home town - London.
Please can anyone let me know if they reakon Kings Cross is like Soho in London because the way it is writen in the Australian Lonely Planets guide reads like it is.
Any views greatly appricated. Also, would anyone recommend the hostels Evas Backpackers or Orginals Backpackers???
im off there on the 27th sep staying the jolly swagman hostel. Anyone heard of it or near to there?
I'll let you know what it is like!
If anyone is about and fancies meeting up then get in touch!
im currently at the jolly swagman hostel in kings cross. its a lively hostel and everyone almost always goes out at night. there is a big crowd that have been living there for bout 6 months, and are now working in sydney, which were kinda intimidating at first cos they all have known each other for so long.
i am originally from Sydney (now in Canada on a working vias/holiday) but Kings Cross is a pretty fun place to go and hang out , it is predominately strip clubs and can be sleazy in a respect but thats what gives it its reputation and drawing , and it is just a walk away into the main area of Sydney so has that added bonus if the whole scene is too much , if you are into dancing there is Oxford St just up from it but it is known to be a very gay orientated area but has some decent dance clubs eg- Plastic
When I stayed in King's Cross I never had any problems but I met someone who got mugged and had his wallet nicked.
There are lots of hostels in nicer areas of Sydney that have regular party nights where they organise a tour of pubs/clubs and you get free/cheap drinks/entry, so if staying in King's Cross is a concern then you could always stay somewhere that organises nightly activities and have the best of both worlds.
I am staying in kings cross at the moment but leaving to go up the east coast today. It is honestly not that bad although it'll probably look a bit sleazy when you first arrive! I am staying in the sydney central backpackers hostel (opposite the jolly swagman) and i would highly recommend it. Just another option for you to consider. There are some great places in kings cross and you are only a walk away from the main sites.
It's a bit like a watered-down version of Soho in London
kings cross is basically just skanky, unless u r a hooker or a drug addict or a deviet the locals tend to steer clear
I ended up staying in Eva's hostel for 4 days and it was really nice, clean and friendly. Full of a lot of scandnavians few english. I was meant to be staying in the jolly swagman but it was a bit dirty and havent heard to many good things about it.
Another hostel to try is the www.basebackpackers.com i stayed in the two in townsville and magnetic island, proper swish, highly recommended and they have a new hostel in sydney !!
