Hey!

I'm new here my first post actually. I need your help guys to make my dream true the right way. Finally i have some money and time to travel to USA and see some states. I will come to New York from Greece and i will stay there a few days to check some universities and have fun at NY. My problem is that i want to go at California and i don't know what is the correct way to do it and how many days and money i will need to see the coast line. Here i need your help.

The ways to come are two. Buy an one month ticket from Greyhound busses and travel from NY to CA. And also try to go to different places with the bus in the Cali. This way is good cause i will see also other states but it is too slow and i will need money to travel all those days for eating which is the same as the money i will need to pay an airline ticket.

The second way is the airline ticket. I will see less states but i travel faster.

Also i want to start with Cali from San Fransisco bay and go down. How many days do you think it needs this to it by renting car. Cause i have read from older posts that i doesn't worth to travel with any other way through California.
Places i definately want to stop are: San Francisco to see some universities, Santa Cruz(surf), Santa Barbara, Malibu and LA.

So here are my questions:
1) How many days i will need for all of those to see a good percentage of them? Also if i rent the car are places that you can park the car and stay at night so i don't have to pay for hotels every day?

2) What are the prices of the Motels and are the safe? Also what about youth hostels? Are safe and clean at CA and NY?

3) Do you know any website with the mile distances over the USA and one with detailed road maps?

4) Also how are the prices of the food at NY and CA? How much i will need for an average healthy meal. I mean My salad and a Meat something.

Any other advice that you think is needed it is welcomed!

I don't say thanks from now cause i will need your help many times as i try to figure out the correct plan. :)

1) For California, you might need to spend about a week touring San Fran and LA. There's lots to see. You also need to check out San Diego as well. There are also rest stops & service stations along the freeways which run 24-hours so it's pretty safe if you plan to rent a car and just sleep there if you don't want to spend money on a hotel.

2) I'm not too sure about the motels and hostels. All I know is that if you plan to stay in New York City, the rates are quite expensive so I advise you to stay somewhere upstate, or in New Jersey.

3) Mapquest.com is the best North American site for road maps and directions, though at some times it is not accurate.

4) New York is loaded with fine cuisine restaurants that offer healthy menus. Prices are pretty affordable, anywhere from 5$ - 15$. California is pretty much the same.

Hope this helps :)

dJMILLION,

Thank you so much for bothering to answer my questions one by one. It was really helpfull your post. Hopefully i will stay at a friend in NY and for CA i have 10 days to stay there. So i guess it is fine. The idea stopping and sleeping and service stations is cool. I will stick to that propably. If it is not a trouble for you could you tell me some places that it worths to visit at California and which road is the best to take?
