Have you guys ever wondered why the Italian team always wears blue when they compete against other countries? Why isn't it green, red, white or a combination of all 3 colours on their flag? Would any Italian friends here like to clarify?

For those with burning questions, please contribute here too.

What is the deal with Keirin? Only the Japanese would invent a sport that involved following a moped around a track for 2 kilometres.

Canadian wrestlers wear blue, too. Definitely odd.

I'm trying to understand "Modern Pentathlon". What's it about? Why's the symbol look like a horse? What's ancient pentathlon?

Pierre de Coubertin just 'invented' this discipline(s) as some of contest for the allround sportsmen/women. Since 1912 it is on the Olympic Games (Stockholm).

I guess the older pentathlon existed of killing dinosaurs, exploring caves, enjoying non-christian era, s*x (still wonder why they elimated that one) and eating.

Tway, the occasional Canadian sportsman wearing blue is not odd at all. In fact, I've seen the majority of Team Canada wearing red and white. But for Italy...that's indeed strange (they seem to be all in blue!)

On the other hand, I find Curling absolutely hilarious!

Yup--just the wrestlers seem to be wearing all blue. Maybe wrestling only has 2 colours to choose from.

I thought all Italian athletes wore blue. The big poster in the Italian restaurant near work says "Championi Azuri 2006" -- seems to be a theme.

I think 'Championi Azuri' means 'Blue Champions' in English? That's exactly what I want to find out – why blue? What is the significance of the colour blue to Italians? Why not red, green, or neon yellow? Hmmm...do I have to do some historical research on this?

Oh I see! I read this answer somewhere on the net...

Blue was the royal family's (Savoia) colour, that's why athletes representing Italy wear blue...

Can anyone confirm this?
