Hello all,

Im thinking of travelling from Paris (Charles de Gaulle airport) down to Marseille Provence with my brother by train or bus. I thought it would be good to travel across various parts of France stopping at various places on the way.

Does anyone know if I can do this cheaply & quickly?

The two of us will have 7 days - 2 1/2 spent in Poland & the rest in France before heading back to the UK. Is this really enough time to see Paris, enjoy the countryside, as well as enjoy Marseille? Or do you think itd be better to cut this land travel out & just book a cheap flight in advance?

Im really unsure. I havent been to France for a long time so don't want to rush anything, but would like to travel a fair amount considering my brother & i have only one week that both of us can go away together.

Thankyou all so much,
this is an important trip so any advice is really appreciated.

We did Marseille-Paris last year by TGV. By some stroke of luck, the first class tickets were cheaper than regular tickets when we booked.

Honestly, though--I'd skip Marseille. There's so much to see in Paris, and you'll find yourself running around more than actually seeing anything. You'll be exhausted from just travelling from one place to another.

I also didn't find Marseille was really worth the side trip. There's one tiny beach, a port, and lots of walking--but it's quite a run-down city and it's missing that special charm you see throughout France. Les Iles de Frioule were nice, as was a side trip to Aix-en-Provence, but I wouldn't go out of my way to see Marseille. My 2 cents' worth!

Enjoy your trip!

If you want to go somewhere else in France for a couple of days, I agree that Marseille possibly isn't an ideal choice ( i really like it, but it doesn't have that much in the way of sights). I would suggest some combination of Aix-en-Provence, Avignon, Lyon and Montpellier if you want to head to that part of the world.

Travel times in France are short on core routes, so it is feasible to do a couple of places as well as Paris, though obviously you would only be getting a taster.

If you do want see a few places, i would suggest something maybe like 3.5 days in Paris, then train to Lyon in the afternoon/eve (it's 2hours). Then eve/all of next day/half of following day in Lyon, train to Avignon (90mins ish to centre) and spend the rest of the time there before going back to Paris (3hrs 15ish from the centre of Avignon)

It is a bit rushed, but will at least give you a chance to see a couple of other places and get a feel for them. Though, of course, you could easily spend 6months in Paris and still not see everything
